Classic American Apple Pie

classic apple pie-1-3

You're probably wondering why my classic pie is made in a tart dish. That's simple, I was making 2 other pies at the same time and I ran out of pie baking dishes, so this is the only thing I had left. But who cares,  right? I've said this over and over again that making pies is super easy. I used to think that the pastry is so hard to make, but really it's not. It's basically butter and flour with ice water and some salt and sugar. And if you have a food processor it's the easiest thing in … [Read more...]

Lemon Blueberry Scones

lemon blueberry scones-1-4

I love this time of year, it's great when it comes to finding all kinds of fruits  and berries. Now you can find lots of blueberries and strawberries at pretty decent prices. So I bought lots of berries this weekend, among which included a whole lot of blueberries. Since then I've made blueberry shakes, I put blueberries on pancakes, and of course one must bake with blueberries. Which is what I did. I, for one, love scones. There's nothing better than a delicious berry scone fresh right out … [Read more...]

Savory Cheese Pie (Placinta cu Branza)

This is such an easy savory cheese pie recipe.  I don't think cheese pies are as popular here in North America as they are in Europe and especially Turkey. There are so many variations of cheese pies, but I found a very easy way for me to make these. Whenever I make them. my husband and I fight over them, that's how good they are. For these you can use any puff pastry you can find.  I do not make the puff pastry so that's why this is so easy. Savory Cheese Pie (Placinta cu Branza)   … [Read more...]

Mandazi, African Donuts

african donuts-1 (2)

I've been really sick this weekend with a sore throat and the last thing I wanted to do is cook. But I was in the mood for some donuts. :) I wanted something different though, and surfing through the web I came across this African donuts recipe. I was delighted. Don't get me wrong, most donuts recipes are pretty similar but these donuts are with coconut milk which is what I think makes them special. They were wonderful, so tasty, light and fluffy, not too sweet, so I sprinkled some … [Read more...]

Chocolate Blueberry Jam Pull Aparts

chocolate jam pull aparts-1

I don't know what to call this. I've thought and thought about it. So I'm stuck with Chocolate Blueberry Jam Pull Aparts. Why? I have no idea. But who cares what it's called. It's freaking amazing! You know, there's a bakery close by here, Cob's Bakery, and every once in a while after work we'll stop by there and pick up some goodies. They have this pastry called Blueberry Teatime or Cranberry Teatime, and sometimes we'll pick up one of those. They look amazing and oh boy are they ever … [Read more...]

Apple Strudel

apple strudel-1-9

Have you ever watched the show "The Best Thing I Ever Made/Ate"? Well I love to watch that show. Most of the stuff on there looks fairly complicated, but Duff Goldman was on the show and he said the best thing he ever made and ate is his family's apple strudel. The reason this stood out to me is because I love apple strudels, and usually they're fairly easy to make. So, seeing as I'm not one to back down from such a challenge, I decided to make this special apple strudel. But before I did, … [Read more...]

Scrumptious Caramel Pear Pie

caramel pear pie (1 of 1)-13

It's been a gorgeous weekend here in Calgary, sunny and the temperature has been great. These are the days when I love being here. It actually feels like spring! I'm not fooling myself, I know more snow is to come, but for now I am happy. So to celebrate such a great weekend, I decided to make a scrumptious caramel pear pie. I've never made pear pie before, so I wasn't sure how it was going to end up, but it turned out unbelievable. I used to avoid making pies because I was scared of making … [Read more...]

I finally did it! I made baklava! I've been wanting to make it for a long time but have always been scared of making it, thinking it is really difficult to make. Well I was wrong, baklava couldn't be easier to make. Oh and it turned out so good, I can't stop eating it. I was thinking of taking it to work on Monday, but I'm afraid there won't be any left by then. I don't think it's a Christmas dessert, probably has nothing to do with Christmas, but it's such an elegant dessert, that it's bound … [Read more...]

'I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Cheese Pastries

cheese pastries-12

I love anything with cheese in it, especially cheese pastries, pies, well anything that's baked. I made these pastries savory, but I needed to put something in the middle so I decided to go with a little bit of blueberry jam. The rest of the pastry is savory and it's just so good. I used feta and ricotta cheese in the filling and that's all. I like mixing ricotta and feta together, because feta is very salty and ricotta is bland, so when you pair them together, they are perfect, which makes for … [Read more...]

Pear and Almond Cream Tart

pear and almond cream tart

Although I don't enjoy the cold weather (yet I live in Calgary, go figure), I do love the fall colors and this tart is perfect for this time of year. I made this tart with pears, but it can easily be done with peaches, nectarines, apricots or apples. Usually I'm not big on tarts, but I do think they look adorable and have recently started experimenting with different tarts. It's such a great way to use up some fruits and let me tell you it will surely impress your guests. To make this tart … [Read more...]

Peach and Cherry Tarts

peach and cherry tart3

These peach and cherry tarts make for such a stunning dessert that you can literally whip up in a few minutes. It's perfect for when you have unannounced guests, or when you just have a sweet tooth and want something in a hurry. This is why I love puff pastry. It's just so versatile. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the desserts that you can make with them. As far as I'm concerned these are healthy too because of all the fruit, but that might be just me trying to fool myself. … [Read more...]
