Salt collection is administered by a cooperative, and any local family that wants to is granted the right to harvest salt from a specific pond.
Thus, Sacred Valley Salt is harvested, not by laborers working in a salt mine for a big company, but rather by individual families with their own salt ponds, who use the salt they collect to supplement the income from their family farm. Further, rather than simply hiring people to make the packaging and package the salt, Sacred Valley Salt forms partnerships with local, independent, Peruvian-owned small business to produce the hand-made packaging and to pack and ship the salt. In this way, these small businesses are helped to invest in their own success. Preference is given to businesses owned by women, and those that hire people with disabilities.

- Environmental Impact: Sacred Valley Salt likely has a smaller environmental impact than any other salt you can buy today. There is no excavation, the salt is evaporated from ponds that were hand-hewn over 800 years ago. There is no heavy equipment. Not even electricity is used. All production is powered by the sun and by humans. All processing is done by hand, and all packaging is 100% handmade.
- Social Impact: Sacred Valley Salt directly benefits the local inhabitants of the Sacred Valley. 100% of production is conducted locally by Peruvian-owned cooperatives and independent small businesses.
- Undetectable Fluoride Content: Himalayan Salt, as well some sea salts, have been tested to have rather high levels of fluoride, at times even exceeding levels found in fluoridated salt (typically 250 pp.m). Sacred Valley Salt has no detectable flouride (less than 1 ppm). For those wishing to minimize flouride intake, this is significant.
- Unique: The Andean salt spring only supports the production of about 180 tons of salt annually. (To give a sense of scale, this is about ½,000 the annual production of the Khewra salt mine in Pakistan, where Himalayan pink salt is produced). Also, the hand-made, reusable packaging is a refreshing change from typical, disposable packaging.
We found this salt to be mild with a hint of citrus in the aftertaste. Its excellent flavour that has been singled out for praise by noted chefs. Sacred Valley Salt contains several trace minerals and other micronutrients and is completely unrefined and free of additives. Unlike Himalayan salt, it has no detectable fluoride and unlike traditional sea salt, it has no contamination from microplastics or other ocean pollutants.
