Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 large egg white lightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 tbsp sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 F degrees.
  • Add the first 4 ingredients to a bowl and whisk well.
  • In another big bowl add the two flours, salt and baking powder. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the chocolate and gently fold it in.
  • Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir until moist.
  • Turn the dough over onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until the flour is incorporated. Place the dough onto a baking sheet and using a rolling pin roll the dough until it’s about 3/4 of an inch in thickness.
  • Brush the dough with the egg white, then cut it into 12 pieces, you can use a pizza cutter or a knife. Sprinkle the top with sugar.
  • Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

I don’t have wheat flour. Can I substitute with almond flour?

You can give it a try, but keep in mind almond flour has much larger particles than wheat flour.

These are probably the best scones I have made yet! Although I do not think they are just 160 calories per scone. I am getting 212. Yikes…a bit of a difference.

I just rant it again through calorie count and it’s saying 159 calories a scone.

    Hello!
Love your site. I made these scones yesterday exactly as written. The dough was verrrry wet. I ended up adding about another 1/2[ plus] cup of flour. If I did not do this I would not have been able to move it from the surface to the baking sheet I did not roll it, but gently patted it into the circle and 3/4 inch thickness.. My husband taste tested one after they were done and procalimed them delicious. I did increase the cook time by about 5 minutes. Nice size scone. Will definitely make again.

      Hi Rosemary,
Interesting, because my dough was very dry, but yeah this can happen, depending on altitude. So what you did was great, just add more flour, that’s all.

Oh my! These look delicious! Are you sure they’re only 160 calories? 😉 Will give these a try.

Well that’s what calorie count says, so I’m sticking to that, remember there’s not many bad ingredients here, only 3 tbsp of butter and this recipe does make 12 scones, so it sounds about rights. 🙂
