With just a few minutes of your day, this Italian Seasoning Recipe will come together with minimal effort. Made with Italy’s favorite aromatic herbs, you can add this versatile blend to practically any meal you prepare. From meats, veggies, sauces, even a homemade salad dressing.
Of all the spice blends I’ve used on this blog, Italian seasoning has to be in the #1 place by a landslide. This beautiful mixture of herbs is perfectly balanced and such a nice way to give a boost of flavor in any savory dish you’re looking to prepare.
Besides its ease of use, this recipe is also made with a mixture of herbs you’re sure to have handy in your pantry. These staples are fantastic on their own, but together they create a harmony you won’t be able to get enough of. You can, quite honestly, use your Italian seasoning in place of any dried herbs called for in a recipe.
Ingredients
- Oregano
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Marjoram
Make sure you get these herbs dried rather than ground. You can adjust the amounts called for, or add some extras like salt, garlic powder, onion powder, or dried sage.
How to make Italian seasoning
- Mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container or jar.
This will make just under 3/4 cup of Italian seasoning. You can cut the recipe down or multiply it depending on how often you use Italian seasoning.
How long do homemade spice blends last?
Your Italian seasoning, as long as you keep it in an airtight container, will last 2-3 years. Dried spices won’t grow mold, so you’ll know it’s time to start fresh simply when the herbs are no longer aromatic. Here are some tips for making spices and blends last as long as possible:
- If you’re using a freshly washed jar or container, make sure it is completely dry. Dry it with a towel, then leave it upside down on a dish rack for an hour. Any moisture left over can compromise your blend.
- Tins or glass jars are best for keeping your blend fresh. Plastic is porous and can let air in and out.
- Keep your blend in a dark, cool place such as a pantry or spice drawer.
- Write the date you mixed the blend on the bottom of the jar to be able to keep accurate track of how old it is.
