3 nutella stuffed rolls on a plate with one broken in half

I love these sweet rolls, they are perfect for a Saturday or Sunday morning.  I woke up this morning around 6:30 and was in the mood for something sweet like cinnamon rolls, but I didn’t have any, so I decided to make my own. My husband was still sleeping so by the time he woke up the house smelled like homemade rolls and freshly brewed coffee, is there any better way to wake up?

These sweet rolls are wonderful and so versatile because you can practically fill them with anything you like. For example, you can fill them with the jam of your choice, or if you love Nutella like me, fill them all with Nutella. I think I’ve mentioned before how much I love Nutella, so I need not go on.

Everything you need to know about this recipe is right there in the name. Sweet rolls filled with molten Nutella, ready to be feasted on by you and your loved ones!

Don’t Fear The Rolls

I know that for baking beginners, making your own rolls may seem like a bit of a nerve wracking challenge. But fear not! My recipe is super simple and beginner friendly.

So let’s get into it, I promise to go easy on you!

Ingredients

Yeast mixture

  • Yeast – This is arguably the most important ingredient in this whole recipe. I’ve made sure to include a section below that gives you all the info you could possibly need for handling your yeast.
  • Milk – We want to use milk to help allow our yeast to bloom. Warm up your milk carefully – not too hot not too cold.
  • Sugar – Just a bit of sugar, it’s the food our yeast eats  that allows it to become active.

Dough

  • Wet ingredients – Butter, milk, and eggs.
  • Dry ingredients – Sugar, salt, and flour.
  • Nutella – You can use either Nutella or jam – whichever you’d prefer!
  • Egg wash – Just 1 egg beaten to be brushed over top to form the beautiful golden brown crust over our rolls.

How To Make Nutella Stuffed Rolls

process shots showing how to make nutella stuffed rolls

Dough

  1. Prep the yeast: Add 1/4 cup of the milk to a cup and warm it up in the microwave until it’s lukewarm. Add the yeast to the milk, a tsp of sugar and mix well. Let the yeast mixture sit for about 10 min until it froths up and bubbles.
  2. Combine the wet ingredients: Melt the butter in a sauce pan or in the microwave. In a mixer add the melted butter and sugar and mix until the sugar and butter are well incorporated. Add the eggs and continue mixing until the mixture is light. Add the yeast mixture, remaining milk, salt and continue mixing until everything is well incorporated.
  3. Form the dough: Start adding the flour half a cup at a time and mix well. The dough is ready when it no longer sticks to your hands. Add additional flour if you need it.
  4. Let the dough rise: Let the dough rise until it doubles in size, make sure you cover it with a clean damp towel or plastic wrap, about an hour to an hour and a half.
  5. Preheat your oven: To 375 F degrees.

Assembly

  1. Assemble the sweet rolls: Once the dough has doubled in size, on a floured surface cut the dough into 6 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Set aside and cover with wrap, we’ll work with one ball at a time. Roll out a ball into a circle that’s about 12 to 14 inches in diameter. Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into either 6 equal pizza slices or 8, depends how big you want your rolls. Drop a teaspoon of Nutella at the top of each slice, you can spread it around or just leave it as one big dollop. Starting at the top roll out each piece and shape into a crescent.
  2. Finish the rolls: Repeat with the remaining balls. Put the sweet rolls onto an ungreased baking sheet. Before you put them in the oven, brush them with egg wash so they will turn out nice and shiny. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

The Oven Is The Best Place For Your Dough To Rise

Your oven is a great tool for baking recipes like these that require allowing the dough to double in size. Preheating your oven to 200 F degrees will ensure that your oven is nice and warm at a good consistent temperature for your little sweet rolls in the making. It will also protect it from any breezes floating through the kitchen and will ensure your rolls turn out just like mine! Just make sure to turn off the oven before placing the dough in there.

Get The Most Out Of Your Yeast

  1. Always check the expiration date on your yeast and make sure it hasn’t expired. All your yeast products whether it’s in a jar or a package should be stamped with a “Best if Used by” date. Always make sure you check this date, even when you purchase the yeast.
  2. To keep your yeast fresh and longer lasting, unopened yeast packages or jars should be stored in a cool or dry place such as your cupboard.
  3. However, you can also store your yeast in the fridge or freezer. If you do store it in the freezer and need to use yeast for your baking, make sure you take out the amount you need and let it sit at room temperature for at least half hour before using.
  4. Once your yeast package or jar has been opened, you must refrigerate the yeast or freeze it in an airtight container.
  5. One thing to remember about your yeast, is that it is a living organism and over time it will lose activity, even if you’ve never opened the jar or package. So if you don’t bake often, buy the smaller yeast packages rather than a big jar of yeast.
  6. If after dissolving the yeast in the lukewarm milk with the sugar, the yeast didn’t start to froth up, do not continue with the rolls, your dough will not rise.

What Else Can I Use In My Sweet Rolls?

The beauty of these sweet Nutella stuffed rolls are how many different fillings you can stuff them with and still have the perfect morning meal.

  • Jam – any flavor you’d like
  • Marmalade
  • Marshmallow fluff
  • Peanut butter
  • Apple pie filling
  • Bananas
  • Cream cheese

How To Prepare Egg Wash

Egg wash provides some color and structure to your finished baked good, I’ve provided a really basic and simple recipe for egg wash below.

  • 1 egg beaten in a bowl thoroughly with a fork.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of water and a small pinch of salt and combine well.
  • Then just brush it over your rolls! Simple as that.

Leftovers

You can store these Nutella stuffed rolls right on the counter wrapped in foil or plastic wrap for up to 5 days. You can freeze these rolls easily, just place them separately on a baking sheet and freeze before transferring to a freezer bag or airtight container. They will last for up to 6 months and can be thawed right on the counter when ready to eat.

Nutella Stuffed Rolls – Homemade and mouthwatering sweet rolls filled with Nutella hazelnut spread! Perfect for a weekend morning and they go great with a good cup of coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (500 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 stick butter ((8 tbsp))
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 5½ cups all-purpose flour (up to 6 cups)
  • 1 cup nutella ( or jam of your choice)
  • 1 egg (beaten for brushing over the rolls)

Instructions

  • Add ¼ cup of the milk to a cup and warm it up in the microwave until it's lukewarm. Add the yeast to the milk, a tsp of sugar and mix well. Let the yeast mixture sit for about 10 min until it froths up and bubbles.
  • Melt the butter in a sauce pan or in the microwave. In a mixer add the melted butter and sugar and mix until the sugar and butter are well incorporated. Notes

  1. This recipe will yield 48 rolls.
  2. These can be frozen after you make them. Reheat them in the microwave.
  3. These would be great filled with fruit jam, or even a mixture of Nutella and jam.
  4. If the dough doesn’t rise, check the expiry date of your yeast. I keep my yeast in the freezer to help it last longer.
