It’s the perfect dish to make your next Christmas morning breakfast, brunch, or potluck a delicious success!

  • Savory and Comforting! The combination of crusty bread, rich eggs, veggies, and melty cheese is the perfect balance of flavors and textures, creating a dish that is both satisfying and comforting.
  • Versatile Favorite! You can serve this dish for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. Plus, you can easily tailor it to your personal taste by using different types of bread, veggies, and cheese.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients needed to make a strata.
  • Challah Bread: Soft and slightly sweet, challah bread forms a sturdy foundation. Brioche or artisan bread are good substitutions.
  • Olive Oil: Used to sauté the vegetables. You can use a vegetable oil like canola if you prefer.
  • Onion: Adds depth and mild pungent flavor. Any type of onion you have on hand will work.
  • Red Bell Pepper: Provides a little sweetness and crisp texture. Yellow or orange bell peppers also offer a similar effect.
  • Fresh Spinach: Contributes a burst of freshness and earthiness. Kale is another option.
  • Gruyère Cheese: Adds the melty layer of rich cheese. Swiss or Emmental cheese provides a comparable flavor profile.
  • Eggs: Creates the custardy base and binds the breakfast strata together.
  • Milk: Provides moisture and creaminess. Whole milk or 2% is the best choice, but a dairy-free option such as soy or almond milk will work.
  • Seasonings: Salt and black pepper season the whole dish and enhance the flavor of each ingredient.
  • Ground Mustard: Infuses the strata with a mild kick. Dijon mustard or yellow mustard are good alternatives.

How To Make Strata

Similar to my overnight breakfast casserole, this strata recipe involves soaking bread in eggs and baking it with a mixture of other ingredients. It’s easy peasy and a great way to transform simple ingredients into a tasty masterpiece

Sauté The Veggies

process shots showing how to make strata.

To begin, heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Then add the onion and red bell pepper, and saute for about 5 to 7 minutes or until softened. Next, add the fresh spinach and cook it for another 2 to 3 minutes until it wilts. Then remove the pan from the heat and let the vegetable mixture cool slightly.

Form The Base

Next, evenly spread the cubes of challah bread on the bottom of a generously greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Then scatter the cooked vegetables and grated cheese evenly over the bread.

Add The Eggs

First, whisk the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, and ground mustard together in a large bowl. Then, pour the mixture evenly over the bread, veggies, and cheese. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down to help it absorb the egg mixture.

Now, cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and let the casserole sit for at least 30 minutes to give the bread enough time to soak up the liquid fully.

Bake The Casserole

After soaking, transfer the covered strata to an oven preheated to 350°F (180°C) and bake for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and let it bake for another 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown on top and set.

Once done, remove your strata from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. This time allows the casserole to set more and for the flavors to further develop. Then serve and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I add to the strata recipe?

This dish is quite versatile. You can add more veggies like sautéed mushrooms, diced tomatoes, or asparagus. Incorporate some protein by adding ham, bacon, sausage, or even shredded chicken. Experiment with different cheeses such as sharp cheddar, creamy feta, or parmesan cheese. Garnish the dish with fresh herbs like parsley, chives, or thyme. The options are limitless!

Why did my strata turn out dry?

Overbaking or insufficient liquid absorption can result in dry strata. Ensure you follow the recommended baking times and allow the bread enough time to soak in the egg.

Why is my strata mushy?

This can result from not baking it long enough or not pressing the bread down into the egg mixture. Remember to use a knife or toothpick to check for doneness.

How many days in advance can you make a strata?

You can prep a strata recipe one day in advance and keep it in the fridge overnight. More than a day the strata can become dry or mush. This is because the bread will continue to absorb the egg mixture over time, making it more difficult to bake properly. Additionally, the vegetables may leach out their juices, which can also affect the texture of the strata.

Expert Tips

  1. Grease the pan. Ensure thorough greasing of the baking dish with butter or cooking spray. This step prevents sticking and helps achieve a beautifully golden crust on the bottom of your strata.
  2. Preheat your oven. Make sure to preheat your oven to the specified temperature. Consistent heat is crucial for even baking and achieving a golden-brown top.
  3. Let it soak. Allow the strata to sit for at least 30 minutes, ensuring the bread fully absorbs the egg mixture for a creamy and custardy texture.
  4. Check for doneness. When making a strata recipe you can insert a knife or toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, with no raw egg mixture sticking to it, your strata is ready.
  5. Rest before serving. Allow the strata to rest for 5 to 10 minutes after removing it from the oven. This resting period allows the casserole to set, making it easier to slice.

Storage

You can store leftover strata wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can keep it in the freezer for about 2 months and just thaw it overnight in the fridge before reheating.

To reheat, warm it in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for approximately 15 minutes or until heated through. If you need a quicker option, pop it in the microwave for a few minutes on medium power.

This Strata is a cozy, comforting dish perfect for any meal. It starts with cubes of soft challah bread, layered with sweet onions, crisp red bell peppers, and fresh, leafy spinach. The layers are sprinkled with rich, nutty Gruyere cheese, adding a wonderful depth of flavor. Everything is soaked in a simple, savory custard made from eggs and milk, seasoned just right with salt, pepper, and a hint of ground mustard. Once baked, it transforms into a golden, bubbly delight with a creamy, custardy inside and a toasty, crispy top.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups challah bread (cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 1 medium red bell pepper (chopped)
  • 2 cups fresh spinach (roughly chopped)
  • 1½ cup Gruyere cheese (grated)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground mustard

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and red bell pepper, and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the spinach to the skillet, and cook until wilted, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  • In the prepared baking dish, create a layer of challah bread cubes. Scatter the cooked vegetable mixture and grated cheese evenly over the bread.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, ground mustard. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and vegetables, ensuring that all the bread is covered.
  • Press down gently on the bread with a spatula to help it absorb the egg mixture. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, and let it sit for at least 30 minutes to allow the bread to fully soak up the liquid.
  • Bake for 30 minutes covered, then remove the aluminum foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the egg mixture is set.
  • Remove from the oven and let the strata rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Equipment

  • 9×13-inch Casserole Dish

Notes

  1. Bread Choice: Challah bread works great for this recipe due to its rich, slightly sweet flavor and soft texture. However, you can also use other types of bread like brioche or a sturdy sourdough for a different twist.
  2. Make-Ahead Tips: Assemble the strata the night before and refrigerate it. This allows the bread to fully absorb the egg mixture, resulting in a more flavorful and cohesive dish. Just remember to let it sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes before baking.
  3. Adding Meat: For a non-vegetarian version, consider adding cooked and crumbled bacon, sausage, or diced ham to the layers.
