When I’m looking to elevate my snack game, these Twisted Hot Dog Rolls are my go-to. A delightful fusion of soft dough, savory hot dogs, and a sprinkle of cheese, parsley, and green onions, these rolls aren’t just visually striking but pack a punch of flavor too. Perfect for sharing, they’ll be the star of any table they grace.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients needed to make twisted hot dog rolls.

Dough

  • All-purpose flour: Provides the structure for the rolls. If you don’t have it, bread flour can work, but it may result in a chewier texture.
  • Butter: Adds richness and flavor to the dough. In a pinch, you can use margarine or shortening.
  • Sugar: Gives a touch of sweetness and aids in yeast activation. Honey or agave nectar can serve as alternatives.
  • Salt: Enhances flavor and regulates yeast activity. If using sea salt, adjust for granularity.
  • Active dry yeast: Ferments to make the dough rise. Fresh yeast or instant yeast can be alternatives; adjust proportions as needed.
  • Egg: Provides richness and helps with browning. If allergic, consider a flaxseed or chia seed egg replacement.
  • Water: Hydrates the flour and activates the yeast.

Hot Dogs

  • Hot dogs: The main protein and centerpiece. Feel free to swap with sausage or vegan alternatives.
  • Green onions: Add a fresh, sharp flavor. Scallions or chives can be an alternative.
  • Parsley: Contributes a herbal touch. Fresh cilantro or basil can be used for a different flavor profile.
  • Cheddar cheese: Melts to provide a creamy texture and savory taste. You can replace with mozzarella or Monterey Jack for a milder flavor.
  • Egg for egg wash: Gives a golden sheen to the baked rolls. A milk or cream wash can also be used for browning.

How To Make Twisted Hot Dog Rolls

ingredients needed to make twisted hot dog rolls.

Begin by combining water, yeast, and sugar, letting it sit until bubbly. In a separate bowl, mix flour with salt. Then, whisk melted butter and egg together, and merge this with the flour mixture and the yeast concoction. Hand-knead the resulting dough, adding extra flour if necessary, and let it rise in an oiled bowl.

Once doubled in size, divide the dough into six portions, rolling each into a rectangle to wrap around a hot dog. Slice each wrapped hot dog into segments, ensuring not to cut through the dough completely. Gently roll and shape these into flower-like designs.

Before baking, brush each with egg wash, and sprinkle cheddar cheese, parsley, and green onions on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 375℉ until golden brown.

Expert Tips

  1. Choose Your Hot Dogs Wisely: Opt for high-quality hot dogs to enhance the flavor of your rolls. You may also consider using sausage or other filled meats for a different taste profile.
  2. Dough Consistency: Ensure that your dough is neither too sticky nor too dry. If it’s too sticky, gradually add more flour until it reaches the desired consistency. On the other hand, if it’s too dry, add a bit more water.
  3. Creative Toppings: Don’t feel restricted to just parsley and green onions for garnishing. Explore with various herbs, cheeses, or even some chopped vegetables to add different flavors and textures.
  4. Serving Suggestions: Consider serving these twister hot dog rolls with a side of your favorite dipping sauce, like ketchup, mustard, or even a cheese sauce for added delight.
  5. Watch the Baking Time: Keep a close eye during the baking process to avoid over-browning. Ovens may vary, so it’s better to start checking a bit early to ensure they don’t overbake.

Storage

To store these, first allow them to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, transfer them to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag to maintain their freshness. They can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for up to a week.

If you’re planning to enjoy them at a later date, these rolls are freezer-friendly. Individually wrap each roll in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to serve, simply thaw them in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven until warmed through.

Elevate the classic hot dog with these eye-catching Twisted Hot Dog Rolls. Each roll is a symphony of flavors and textures: the soft, pillowy dough encases a juicy hot dog, while the melted cheddar, aromatic parsley, and crunchy green onions add depth and zest. Perfect for parties, picnics, or a fun family dinner, these rolls are sure to be a hit with both kids and adults.

Ingredients

Dough

  • ⅔ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg

Hot dogs

  • 6 large hot dogs
  • 2 green onions
  • ¼ cup parsley (chopped)
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • In a small bowl mix the water, yeast and sugar together and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it starts bubbling.
  • In another larger bowl, mix the flour with the salt.
  • In a small bowl melt the butter and add the egg and whisk it well.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the flour, including the yeast mixture and mix. You can use your mixer here, but I just kneaded the dough by hand. Add more flour as needed, I used 2 cups of flour, but if you need more, just add some more. Place the dough in an oiled bowl.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let it rest until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat oven to 375℉.
  • Cut the dough into 6 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Roll out each piece into a small rectangle and place a hot dog in the middle of the dough, then just wrap the dough around the hot dog, covering it well.
  • Cut each covered hot dog, into ½ inch pieces, cut the hot dog all the way through, but stop as you reach the dough. Take each piece and roll it out and shape it into a flower as in the picture below.
  • Repeat with remaining hot dogs. Place rolls on a baking lined with parchment paper or a silpat. Brush each roll with egg wash and top with cheddar cheese, parsley and green onions.
  • Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Equipment

  • KitchenAid Artisan 5 Quart Stand Mixer

Notes

  1. The type of hot dog you use matters. Opt for all-beef or your preferred variety for best results.
  2. While cheddar cheese is recommended, feel free to experiment with other cheeses like mozzarella or pepper jack for a different flavor profile.
  3. Make sure to let the yeast mixture bubble before proceeding, as this is crucial for dough rise.
