Orange monkey bread – it’s sticky, it’s gooey, it’s orangey, it’s caramelly, it’s decadent. Perfect for the kid in all of us.
I’m just wondering how much monkey bread one could eat before one goes into sugar overload? Not that I’d want you to, just wondering.
I know I can eat quite a bit. Especially because this orange monkey bread it’s so damn good. It’s sticky just like I like it, sweet and orangey, it’s perfect for all kids out there. And adults. This is not a dessert for kids only, it’s for all sugar lovers out there, no matter the age. But you don’t have to take my word for it, you have to try making this monkey bread.
I was looking up where the name monkey bread came from and apparently it originated in the US, and this sticky gooey monkey bread goes by many names.
Sticky bread, monkey puzzle bread, monkey brains, bubble loaf, pluck-it cake, I think I kind of like the last one. LOL
I think all the names are great and funny and so appropriate for this funny looking sticky bread. Now you know I can’t leave you without a couple orange jokes, come on be silly with me.

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350℉.
- Open all the cans of biscuits and each biscuit into quarters. Fill a large Ziploc bag with the white sugar, the orange zest, and the dash of salt. Seal the bag and shake it until the zest and the sugar are totally combined. Add the biscuit pieces to the bag, seal it and shake it around until all the biscuit pieces are coated in the orange sugar. Don’t give up, keep shaking until each piece is nicely coated. Pour the pieces into a bundt pan and set it aside.
- In a medium pan over medium heat, melt the butter then stir in the brown sugar and orange juice until just barely combined. Pour the mixture all over the biscuit pieces.
- Bake for 40 minutes, or until the top of the biscuits are golden brown. Then remove the pan from the oven and set it on a rack. Let the pan sit for at least 10 minutes, then turn the cake out of the pan onto a cake plate.

I made this recipe as instructed. I loved the taste, but I was not happy with the texture. It was too dense. Maybe it was the buttermilk biscuits. I might try this again, but using the original flaky biscuits instead.
I’m glad you enjoyed the flavor of the Monkey Bread! Trying it with original flaky biscuits next time sounds like a good plan to achieve a lighter texture. Baking can be all about experimenting!
Amazing…that’s all you need to know
I now make this every year for Christmas brunch. It is a family favorite. I have made it in the bundt pan, and have also made it in individual giant muffin format. Love the orange caramel that develops if all goes well. Thanks for this version of this fun and easy baked good.
Can this orange monkey bread be made ahead for a Christmas Eve Brunch?
Absolutely, it should last up to a week in the fridge.
In stead of leaving the monkey bread in for the 40 minutes I had only left them in there for 16 minutes cause they are golden brown on top! It was delicious!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Are the biscuits supposed to be soft when you pull them apart and eat them? It’s my first time making monkey bread. 🤔
Yep, they’re supposed to be soft. 🙂
Family favorite.
We had these Christmas morning and they are amazing!!
Only I could mess up something so simple. Combined the brown sugar with the white but continued on. Still came out amazing! This will for sure be a go to recipe for me. I’m thinking pecans next time.
I’ve made this at least five times now. It’s amazing. I add fresh cranberries throughout the pieces before baking as well to add a layer of tartness. But this is a winner, hands down.
So glad you like it!
I will take one to go please! I wish…My son LOVES monkey bread and also those pillsbury orange rolls, so this is going to thrill him! Pinned!
Coming right up! 🙂
What a GREAT monkey-bread !!
I’d looooooooooooove to make it
No matter what you call it (just not Monkey Brains, please!) this looks so delicious! Your addition of orange sounds perfect! And the pilsbury dough makes them super easy!
LOL, thanks Lindsey 🙂
question about the monkey bread, I don’t do store bought anything, so would this work with cinnamon buns dough that I make myself do you think? I have never bought biscuits before so trying to determine the consistency of the dough being used. TIA I love your site!!
Hi Lee,
I’ve always only made monkey bread with store bought Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits. It’s very similar to cinnamon buns dough, maybe a bit firmer. It should work no problem. Let me know if you try it. 🙂
I’m new to this site, & excited about all the recipes I’ve seen. I’m curious if you have a recipe for the biscuits, rather than buying them. I would like to try this recipe with making my own dough. I hope you or someone will chime in & tell me how.
I have lots of recipes for biscuits, but you can use this one: https://www.jocooks.com/recipes/buttermilk-biscuits/
