My Sausage Frittata with mushrooms is a totally satisfying 15 minute meal! Loaded with mushrooms and topped with lots of mozzarella, this frittata is so simple to make and perfect for any day of the week.

The Best Sausage Frittata Recipe

Here’s a nice and easy frittata that you can make any day of the week. It’s perfect for breakfast or brunch and sometimes we even enjoy it for dinner. Frittatas are so great because they’re very versatile, you can pretty much put whatever you have in the fridge in them. This frittata is made with sausage and mushrooms, one of my favorite combinations.

This sausage frittata is an easy meal that you can make all in one skillet. You start it out on the stovetop and finish it off in the oven under the broiler. It’s such a simple dish, but completely comforting and delicious.

  • Very Versatile. While I made this with sausage and mushrooms, frittata is great for cleaning out your veggie drawer!

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients needed to make sausage frittata.
  • Sausage – I like to use Italian sausage, either mild or hot. Sometimes you can buy sausage meat, no casings, you can use that as well.
  • Mushrooms – You can use white mushrooms, cremini or even shiitake.
  • Eggs – Large eggs! I’ve been buying fresh eggs from local farmers for the past couple years and trust me they’re so much better and the color of the egg yolk is so orange. If you have a chance to buy from local farmers, I strongly suggest it.
  • Onion – White or yellow onion both work.
  • Butter – I always opt for unsalted to control the sodium content of my dish.
  • Cheese – I prefer some freshly shredded mozzarella cheese, but you can use cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, fontina, etc.
  • Salt And Pepper – To taste.

How To Make Sausage Frittata

  1. Prep the oven. Turn the oven on to the broil setting. Position a rack in the middle of the oven.
  2. Cook the sausage. In a large skillet, melt the butter and add the sausage. Break the sausage with a fork as much as you can. Cook the sausage for a minute, it doesn’t have to be completely cooked.
  3. Add veggies. Add the chopped onion and mushroom to the skillet. Sauté everything for 5 minutes until the onions soften and the mushrooms begin to brown. Season the mushrooms and sausage with salt and pepper.
  4. Add eggs and mozzarella. Pour the beaten eggs over the mushrooms and sausage in the skillet, do not stir. Cook the eggs, for just a minute and sprinkle the mozzarella over the top.
  5. Broil the frittata. Transfer the skillet to the oven and broil for a couple minutes, just until the top is nice and golden brown. Make sure to watch it carefully because it can quickly burn.
  6. Serve. Let the frittata cool slightly then garnish with parsley and chopped tomatoes if preferred and serve warm or at room temperature.

What Is A Frittata?

A frittata is an Italian egg dish, similar to an omelette or quiche (minus the crust). Since frittatas are often served at room temperature, they are popular for brunches or for a make ahead breakfast for larger groups.

What Else Can I Add To My Frittata?

Frittatas are very versatile which is what makes them so great. You can literally throw in any veggies you like such as spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, etc. You can also switch up the protein to ham, chicken, prosciutto, bacon, salami, etc. The sky is the limit, so just use your imagination, or look in your fridge, chances are you already have some ingredients you can throw in a frittata.

Can I Make This In Advance?

Yes! Frittatas are awesome to make ahead of time. You can do everything up until and including step 3 but don’t pour the egg mixture over the veggies just yet. Let the veggies and sausage come to room temperature, cover and refrigerate until ready to use. When ready to finish the frittata, simply place the skillet on the stovetop and reheat the sausage and veggies then pour the whisked eggs over and finish the recipe as instructed.

Expert Tips

  1. Keep an eye on your frittata when it’s under the broiler! We don’t want it to burn and go to waste.
  2. Use a variety of different ingredients to customize this recipe to your liking. You can make a variety of frittatas and choose your favorite!
  3. Frittatas are typically served at room temp, so don’t worry about it being served hot. It will taste good no matter what!
  4. If you don’t have a broiler function on your oven, you can bake it at 375°F!

Storing Leftovers

Transfer leftover sausage frittata to an airtight container, or cover the skillet tightly with saran wrap or foil and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3 links sausages ((about 6 ounces each) removed from casing)
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 1 cup white mushrooms (chopped, or cremini )
  • 6 large eggs (beaten)
  • salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese

Instructions
