Easy 2 Ingredient Dough Recipe
You all know I love to bake up a storm! From cakes to pies, cookies, and, especially, homemade bread. Sometimes I just don’t have the time or energy to make a yeast dough. When I discovered this easy 2 ingredient dough recipe, it totally changed my baking game!
A good friend of mine actually told me about this recipe, and she uses it to make bagels. She couldn’t rave about enough, so I just knew I had to try it.
While I don’t recommend using this recipe to make a full loaf of bread, it’s a great way to make the easiest possible homemade dinner rolls, flatbreads, pizzas, or pretzel bites or even bagels. Time to throw together the most simple recipe you’ve ever seen!
Ingredients

- Self-rising flour – Check the section below for more details. This is a combination of all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt.
- Greek yogurt – Plain. You can use no fat, low fat, or full fat. I prefer using a Greek plain yogurt since I find it’s a bit thicker, but feel free to use whatever yogurt you have in your fridge. The yogurt is usually added to dough to tenderize it. Because of its acidity, yogurt will relax the gluten, thus making the bread more tender.
What is self-rising flour?
This is simply a mixture of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. You can make your own with 1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 tsp baking powder, and 1/4 tsp salt. Super simple, so if you don’t have self-rising flour in your pantry, don’t worry, you can make it yourself! The baking powder is what actually makes the dough rise when you bake it.
How to make 2 ingredient dough
There really is only 1 step to making this dough. It’s very easy to make too, I made it in my mixer but if you don’t have one, don’t worry, you can mix it by hand too.
- Make dough: Add the flour and yogurt to the bowl of your mixer and mix on medium speed using the dough hook attachment until the dough comes together and comes clean from the side of the bowl. If you don’t have a mixer, add the ingredients to a bowl and mix with a wooden spoon or spatula until just combined, then use your hands to knead the dough a few times until smooth and comes together.
If you find the dough is too sticky, you can add 1 tablespoon of flour into the dough at a time until it’s smooth. The dough should be a bit sticky though and soft, so when you work with it, make sure you flour your work surface and your hands really well.
What to make with 2 ingredient dough
There are so many great recipes you can create with this simple dough! Get creative with your dough and try new things. I actually doubled the recipe here and made 8 dinner rolls which were so good, they were gone in minutes. Here are a few basics to have fun with:
Dinner Rolls
- Flour your work surface well and place the dough on the floured surface. Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces using a dough cutter or a sharp knife, then roll each piece into a roll. Using a sharp knife make a couple small incisions on the top of each bun, that’s about 1/4 inch deep. This is purely to make the dinner rolls look nicer.
- Place them in a buttered cast iron skillet or oven safe skillet and transfer them to a preheated oven at 350 F degrees and bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
Pizza
- Roll the dough out to your desired pizza crust thickness. Add your sauce, cheese, and toppings, then bake at 450F for 12-18 minutes.
Pretzel bites
- Cut the dough in half and roll each piece into a long 1″ thick rope. Cut the ropes into bite sized pieces.
- Optional: Dissolve 1 tbsp baking soda into 1/2 cup hot water. Dunk each bite into this mixture and place on a baking sheet.
- Brush the bites with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse grain sea salt. Bake at 425F for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown.
Flatbread
- Divide the dough into either 6 or 8 equal sized pieces, depending if you want small or large flatbreads. Roll each piece to your desired shape.
- Add olive oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the flatbreads on each side until browned and bubbly.
How to store unbaked 2 ingredient dough
If you want to make this dough in advance, you can. Tightly wrap the dough with plastic wrap. You can also cut it up into portions and wrap them up individually. The dough will last 3 days refrigerated or 1 month frozen. So double up on the recipe and have it ready for whenever you need some dinner rolls.
Whether you’ve stored the dough in the freezer or fridge, let it slowly warm up on the counter to room temperature, still wrapped, before using it.

I made these when we urgently needed some bread to fill out a soup dinner. It did take me ages the first time, because I found it waaaay to sticky and had to add loads of flour, and it took me a while to get it right. The next time I more than halved the amount of yoghurt, with great success, and divided the dough into 6 rolls. They are amazing! Great texture, and a bit of a sourdough taste with the yoghurt. I would add a bit of salt if I wasn’t eating them with butter, but they are lovely. I had one left over and found that it kept really well to eat the next day, with a few seconds in the microwave to warm it a bit.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and tips; it’s always rewarding to hear when readers successfully personalize a recipe!
Has anyone tried this as a gluten free recipe? How did you like it. I’m recently gluten free and have to figure out some type of bread sometimes, I miss it!
While I haven’t personally tried this recipe with gluten-free self-rising flour, I know others have had success with it. You can replace the regular self-rising flour with a gluten-free blend that has xanthan gum (or a similar binder) to help with the texture.
Keep in mind, gluten-free flours can behave a bit differently, so you might need to experiment with the ratios or add a touch more yogurt to get the consistency just right. If you give this a try, please let me know how it turns out.
I made this today using my airfryer, so goood! I added honey on the 2nd batch and 🍯 so delish! ♥️♥️♥️
Great idea, to use the air fryer!
I love this recipe , pizza is my favorite and we cook it in out TREGAER pellet outside great smokies flavor ! Or I add lemon flavor greek yogurt makes a great breakfast rolls.
This recipe adds so much to your meal thanks my family loves it
My pleasure, so glad you guys enjoy it!
Is the nutritional values per roll, or for flour and yogurt
The nutritional info is for 1/4 of the recipe, it assume 4 servings.
Hiya, I made eight small rolls and cooked them in my halogen oven, which is smaller than conventional oven, the outside was lovely and crusty but inside still slightly undercooked, can you advise me on temperature I should cook them at, by the way the crusty bits were really tasty
Yes, for sure, the instructions are right here: https://www.jocooks.com/baking/breads/2-ingredient-dough/#Dinner_Rolls
Tried several fillings, and we ended up liking it with a warm green chili queso drizzled over the ham, cheese and scallion filled one. (The queso isn’t pictured. I’ll try it with cream cheese and jam next time! Quick, versatile and easy recipe!
Looks great, glad you enjoyed it!
I used self-rising wholemeal flour and thick plain yogurt (not Greek) as my ingredients. I also halved the suggested ingredients. The dough was quite sticky at first. I just slowly added more flour until I could form a nice bun. Then I divided the dough into 4 little dinner rolls. Baked them in an airfryer oven (the kind with see-through glass door) at 160 Celsius degree for 25 mins. The result was wonderful. The crust was so crunchy and still a bit moist inside. Thanks for the recipe!
I’m thrilled to hear you had such a wonderful experience with the 2 ingredient dough recipe! Your improvisation with self-rising wholemeal flour and plain yogurt sounds absolutely perfect. The way you adjusted the recipe to make it work for you is exactly what great cooking is about. Thank you so much for sharing your method and the air fryer oven baking tip!
And this is a picture of the bread bread
Looks great!
If I used my cast iron skillet to make the dinner rolls, should I preheat the skillet before I put the dough balls in it to bake?
You don’t have to.
Had some nearly out of date yogurt to use so why not try? I grated the tiniest bit of cheese on top and heat 180 degrees (Uk) 25 minutes later ‘I made these!’ Gonna freeze and take a couple to work each day with a cupasoup for lunch 🙂
This two ingredients roll recipe did not say what degrees to set your oven, or how long to bake them.
This is odd!
Therefore this recipe was not helpful.
Hi Mary! This recipe is for the dough only and not any one specific thing to make with it. However, in the post I do have instructions on what you can make with it and what to set your oven to. You can find all the info here: https://www.jocooks.com/recipes/2-ingredient-dough/#What_to_make_with_2_ingredient_dough
these rolls look so good but I have tried 3 times to make them and they never rise. I have tried self raising flour, plain flour with baking powder added, and strong bread flour and they stay the same size after being baked as they were when raw. I used Greek yogurt so don’t know where I going wrong, has anyone any advice
Try a lower shelf and more heat 👌
Tried different things with the dough… Large flatbread with half cup of each – good but took ages to cook. Thin, smaller flatbreads with no oil – good but dry. Thin flat breads cooked with brushing of olive oil – cannot stop eating them! Little crusty rolls in the air fryer – amazing! (Will make these even smaller and make garlic dough balls.) Thank you – can’t imagine kneading and proving ever again hahaha. Also, love this ‘cup’ measuring (from the UK so would normally have to weigh everything out).
I have to try the air fryer, glad you’re liking the recipe!
This recipe is very easy to make. The taste is a little too tangy but it’s good.
I grated strong cheese on top or I might try adding black pepper in the dough next time 👍🏼
Can i use regular plain yogurt?
Yes, you can!
