If you’ve never had these apple pie bombs before, you’re in for quite a treat. They’re little balls of dough filled with delicious apple pie filling and rolled through melted butter and cinnamon sugar. What I love about these little treats, is that they’re fried in the air fryer, and although we still roll them through some butter, they’re still a bit healthier than frying them.

- Easy Comforting and Delicious Snacks
- Quick to Make
Being able to make a dessert easy, fast and have it taste amazing is what I pride myself with mostly. So, it was my calling to craft this recipe the best way I knew how, with the tools that are the handiest. Having a fried-like dessert without the add-on oils and grease is what I love most about these Apple Pie Bombs. Well, that and the amazing taste!
Ingredient Notes
- Refrigerated Biscuits: I used Pillsbury country biscuits, there are 10 in a can so I used 2 cans, or 20 biscuits. If using the grand biscuits, you’ll have to pull each biscuit into 2 layers. There are 8 biscuits in a can of grands so you’ll end up with 16 biscuits if using just one can.
- Apple Pie Filling: You can use homemade apple pie filling or you can use the store bought kind. Whichever one you use, I do prefer to chop it first so that they’re smaller pieces of apples for these apple pie bombs.
- Butter: You’ll need some melted butter to roll the apple pie bombs through, so that the cinnamon sugar sticks to them. You can use either salted or unsalted.
- Sugar and Cinnamon: You’ll need just regular granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for our cinnamon sugar.
How to Make Apple Pie Bombs In The Air Fryer
- Prep the dough: Separate the biscuits form the can and roll each one into a 4 inch circle using a rolling pin. If using grand biscuits, pull each one into 2 layers.
- Prep the bombs: Spoon 1 tbsp of apple pie filling into each dough circle then pull the sides together over the filling, pinching to seal. Gently roll into a ball. Place the apple pie bombs into the basket of your air fryer about 1 inch apart. You’ll need to do this in batches.
- Bake ’em: Close your air fryer oven door and set the temperature to 380°F. Bake until golden brown, about 5-6 minutes.
- Prep the topping: While the first batch bakes, combine the sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
- Continue baking: Carefully transfer the cooked apple pie bombs to a cooling rack and repeat baking with remaining pies.
- Roll through butter and cinnamon sugar: While the pies are still hot, dip them in the melted butter so that they’re fully coated, then roll them into the cinnamon sugar. Place them back on the cooling rack and repeat with remaining bombs.
- Serve: Serve them by themselves or with a scoop of ice cream.
FAQ’s and Expert Tips
FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Apple Pie Bombs?
Apple Pie Bombs are a fast and tasty dessert, created with store bought biscuit dough which holds together the most delicious apple pie filling. After being air fried, for more added flavor, these fun little treats are dipped and fully coated in melted butter, then tossed in the perfect cinnamon sugar coating. Easy to make, easier to cook and easiest to eat!
Can I use apple jam instead of the pie filling?
I would recommend the apple pie filling instead of any jam, because it has a different texture and flavor to it. Therefore, the apple pie filling gives this dessert a closer feeling of the traditional apple pie.
Can I bake them in the oven instead?
Yes, these can be baked in the oven on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. For this, you would need to heat up your over to about 375 degrees and leave them in for 15 minutes.
Expert Tips
- Be sure you completely seal up the apple pie filling. If you have any sort of opening you will have apple pie filling leaking everywhere.
- Keep in mind that Air Fryers vary in cooking temperatures. I used here the average directions for most Air Fryers.
- If you don’t have an air fryer you can also bake these at 375°F for about 15 to 17 minutes.

Here a few if want to change up, ideas; add cream cheese for a cheese like mixture. So good. Another I make is peanut butter and jelly. Pretty darn good. Hey chocolate pie filling works along with cherry, apple caramel, blueberry, just think of what you can do and do it!!!.
Sounds interesting. I can’t find a plain cookie dough in Australia. Could I use Wonton wrappers? Thanks for your recipes.
I don’t think wonton wrappers would work, too thin. You could try making your own biscuit dough using my recipe here: https://www.jocooks.com/recipes/buttermilk-biscuits/
I am in Australia and we also don’t have prepared dough at all but biscuits in the states are our scones, and I know scone mix is in a box where the flour and baking goods are, which is what I am going to try, I think I will work either quickly ( to keep the dough as cold as possible) or pop them in the fridge for about half an hour, before cooking. It’s worth a try, because it sounds delicious 😋
Here is a simple recipe for plain scones, that might help you here: https://cravinghomecooked.com/scones/
Loooooved this recipe! Huge hit! I made a small quick batch and like others the inside was raw but still ate em lol. Next time maybe 350° for maybe 7-10min. But still freaking awesome!
These look AMAZING! Would of loved to try them, but unfortunately Aotearoa (NZ) hasn’t woken up to biscuits, I wish they would, but there’s no premade anything like this, no biscuits, no bread rolls no pizza dough and no cookie dough, kinda sad isn’t it!? So I’ll just drool at the photos, I’m sure I’ll find something else to try, everything looks SCRUMPTIOUS 1
You can definitely make your own, you can use my recipe here: https://www.jocooks.com/recipes/buttermilk-biscuits/
Had a look and realized that they are basically what we would call scones down this end of the world. We have a cheat recipe for them, called Lemonade Scones with only 3 ingredients, cream, lemonade & self raising flour, give it a Google, unfortunately that’s as quick and easy as they come, no tin of premade dough 🙁
Yeah, I think it’s more of an American thing. We have it here in Canada because we’re neighbours.
Great recipe and easy! I made my own apple filling. Family loved this recipe.
The only way I could ask these questions is if I rated this sorry. I don’t know why it would not work. Can this be made with cherry pie filling instead of apple pie filling? I was just going to try it and then leave a review but thought I would write to see if anyone tried it. Also I have a Big Boss air fryer. Do you think this will work with this type of air fryer?
Hi Patricia,
You can definitely substitute the apple pie filling with cherry filling, just make sure it’s filling and not jam, because it has a different texture to it.
And about the air fryer, since we haven’t tried it ourselves we wouldn’t know the difference between what we use and what you use. Just make sure you follow the manual’s instructions. And also, these can be baked in the oven as well on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. For this, you would need to heat up your over to about 375 degrees and leave them in for 15 minutes.
Let us know how they turn out!
This was a fun recipe. I had my son help me make them so we had a great time. I made them in the air fryer but kept them for 9 min and finished them per your recipe. The very inner layer of some biscuits were raw or too moist. The outside was golden so I would not bake them longer. Just wondering if anyone else had the same results. No worries, we still ate them all!
You could maybe try a lower heat and longer time.
