Apple Cinnamon Scones

Fresh apple cinnamon scones, right out of the oven – there’s nothing like it. If you love yourself and your significant other, make these. They will be your breakfast every morning this week, guaranteed. Don’t forget the cup of coffee!

There’s nothing more homey than a freshly baked scone. I love the smell of apples and cinnamon baking, whether it’s in a pie or these beautiful scones – it’s pure comfort. Now I don’t know if you’re like me, but baking is my passion. The great thing about baking scones is that you don’t have to be a passionate baker, or even an expert baker! Scones are probably one of the easiest things you could bake. You can literally make the dough and throw it in the oven in under 10 minutes, and I’m being generous here.

Don’t Throw Scones At Glass Houses

Other than the obvious reason of breaking a window, I’m referring to the old saying “Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” well this applies here. Do not pass judgement! I will eat these scones for breakfast, lunch, dinner, a snack, in the middle of the night with the lights off – there is no stopping me. That’s how good these are.

They’re so simple to make, and for some reason every time I talk to someone about baking scones they think it’s such a chore, but it’s not – I’ll prove it!

Ingredient Notes

Scones

  • Flour – All-purpose flour, you can substitute with your preference.
  • Oats – I used rolled oats.
  • Spices – I used a blend of ground cinnamon & ground nutmeg.
  • Salt – To taste.
  • Butter – Unsalted and cold.
  • Apple – A large apple of your choice, peeled and chopped!
  • Milk – Use your preference, dairy or non dairy.
  • Honey – The honey adds a little sweetness that compliments the apples and cinnamon beautifully!
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda

Topping

  • Oats – Rolled oats.
  • Sugar – Turbinado sugar, if you don’t have Turbinado sugar don’t worry, you can use brown sugar or even granulated sugar!
  • Spices – Ground cinnamon.
  • Milk – Use your preference!

How To Make Apple Cinnamon Scones

detailed process shots showing how to make dough for apple scones
  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and nutmeg. Cut in the butter with 2 knives or a pastry blender. In another smaller bowl combine together the milk, honey and apple. Add this to the dry ingredients and toss.
  3. Form Dough: Turn onto a floured work surface and knead gently until everything is well combined. Form the dough into a circle that’s about 9 to 10 inches in diameter and about 1/2 inch in thickness.
  4. Finish: Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Cut into 8 wedges and separate the wedges so that they are about 1 inch apart. Brush the wedges with the milk (from the topping ingredients). Combine together the Turbinado sugar, ground cinnamon and rolled oats and sprinkle over each scone, generously.
  5. Bake: Bake for about 20 minutes or until nice and golden brown.

Tips On Making The Perfect Scones

  1. Cold butter is a must! – Work with cold butter. After cutting it into cubes, you can even let them sit in the freezer for 5 minutes before starting.
  2. Don’t over mix! – Don’t overwork the dough. You want the butter to still be in pieces to keep your scones light and flaky.
  3. Get the right tools! – Use a pastry blender. It’ll make the process of cutting the butter into the dry ingredients much easier..
  4. Flour up! – You want the dough to be sticky, so flour your hands and work surface as needed so that you can still handle it.
  5. Apples galore! – Test out different varieties of apples to see which you prefer and really perfect the recipe!

How To Serve

I said it before and I’ll say it again – I will eat this scones anytime, anywhere. They make the perfect breakfast, paired with a hot cup of joe or they can be served as an afternoon snack with a nice cup of tea. The choice is yours!

Speaking of coffee and tea: Who needs over priced scones and lines at the coffee shop? Not me. If you really want to go “all out” and dive into a true coffee house experience, why not try your hand at my London fog recipe.

Leftovers

Store your scones in an airtight container, bread box, or freezer bag to keep them from drying out! They will last 1-2 days at room temperature or up to 7 days stored in the fridge.

Tip:

You can microwave your scones for 5-10 second intervals to mimic the “fresh out of the oven” feel!

Freezing

If you want to enjoy these delectable treats in the future, you can also freeze them! Once the scones have completely cooled down to room temperature, wrap them individually with both plastic wrap and foil.

They will last 2-3 months frozen and will thaw after about 1 hour at room temperature. Another option is to microwave them for 10 seconds at a time until thawed.

I was looking for a recipe to use up some apples and came across this recipe. Just finished making them! They are really good and easy to make if you follow the instructions. Lightly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I used quick cooking oats and they turned out perfectly fine. I will definitely make these again. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

I’m sorry I don’t see anywhere saying at what point should I put the butter in. Can anyone help?

Instead of the oat topping, I sprinkled the scones with streusel. When I removed them from the oven, I drizzled icing – powdered sugar, cream, pinch of salt and vanilla – over the top.

How do you cut the apples? In what shape?

Just chop them up into small pieces! The shape doesn’t matter.

Hello, can I make them in circles rather than wedges? Will it affect anything?

Could I use apple suave rather than an apple?

You could probably use apple sauce, but you won’t get those bigger chunks of apple in the scones.

Also if the mixture becomes too soft because of the apple sauce, you might need to adjust with a bit more flour.

I love the addition of oats in these scones! These are like the perfect flavor combination and would make a sensational breakfast. Can’t wait to adapt them to be gluten-free 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
