These Honey BBQ Chicken Tenders come out of the air fryer crunchy and golden, then get tossed in a sticky sweet honey BBQ sauce. Twenty five minutes, and the sauce takes 3 ingredients and a small saucepan. There’s one decision at the end that changes everything, and I’ll get to it.

Honey BBQ Chicken Tenders – finger licking good!

Chicken tenders are one of those things where the homemade version is genuinely better than the drive through, and it takes almost no skill to get there.

You set up 3 bowls, drag the chicken through them, and put it in the air fryer. That’s it. The coating goes very crunchy, the chicken stays juicy because tenders cook fast, and 10 minutes later you’ve got something that will disappear off the plate faster than you can put it down.

The sauce is where it gets good. Bottled BBQ sauce is fine on its own, but 5 minutes on the stove with honey and a splash of apple cider vinegar turns it into something thicker and glossier and more delicious. The vinegar is doing the real work there, cutting through all that sweetness so it doesn’t just taste like syrup.

Now, the decision. At the end you either toss the tenders in the sauce or serve it on the side, and those give you completely different results. Tossed means sticky, messy, wonderful, and soft within about 3 minutes. On the side means they stay crunchy and everyone controls their own sauce situation.

I do both depending on who’s eating. More on that below, because there’s a third option that gets you both.

Tossed Or Dipped?

This is the only real decision in the recipe and it’s worth 30 seconds of thought.

  • Toss them in the sauce and you get that proper sticky wings situation where every tender is glossy and coated. It’s fantastic. It’s also a countdown, because the warm sauce starts softening the breading immediately and within a few minutes the crunch is gone. Great if everyone’s at the table and hungry. Less great if people are wandering in over half an hour.
  • Serve the sauce on the side and the tenders stay crunchy indefinitely. Everyone dips as much or as little as they want, which is also the diplomatic solution if you’re feeding someone who has opinions about sauce.
  • Or do the third thing, which is my favorite. Brush the sauce onto the tenders, then put them back in the air fryer for 1 to 2 minutes at 400°F. The heat sets the sauce into a sticky glaze instead of letting it soak in, so you get the coating and the crunch. It’s an extra 2 minutes and it’s the version I’d make if I were trying to impress somebody.

Ingredients in Honey BBQ Chicken Tenders

ingredients needed to make honey bbq chicken tenders.
  • Chicken tenders (1½ pounds): These are the small strip of muscle that sits under the breast, and they’re naturally the right size and shape for this. Boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into long strips work perfectly well too, and are often cheaper. Pull the tendons out either way.
  • All purpose flour (1 cup): The first layer, and it gives the egg something to grip. Fair warning, you’ll have a fair amount left over. That’s normal with any breading station and it’s better than running short halfway through.
  • Eggs (2 large, beaten): The glue between the flour and the breadcrumbs. If the egg looks thick and hard to work with, a splash of water loosens it up.
  • Breadcrumbs (1 cup): Panko gives you a noticeably crunchier, lighter coating and it’s what I’d use. Regular breadcrumbs make a finer, more even crust. Both work, they’re just different textures.
  • Salt (1 teaspoon) and black pepper (½ teaspoon): Into the flour, and use actual amounts rather than eyeballing it. Most of this seasoning ends up staying in the bowl, so under seasoning the flour means bland tenders.
  • Garlic powder (½ teaspoon), onion powder (½ teaspoon), smoked paprika (½ teaspoon): All into the flour. The smoked paprika is the important one, since it gives the coating a hint of barbecue before the sauce even shows up.
  • Cooking spray: You need this. Air fryers work by moving hot air, and a dry breaded surface just goes pale and chalky. A light spray is what gets you golden and crisp.

  • BBQ sauce (½ cup): Store bought is completely fine and it’s what I usually grab. My homemade BBQ sauce is better if you’ve got some. Pick one you actually like the taste of, since it’s most of the sauce.
  • Honey (¼ cup): The sweetness and the stickiness. Maple syrup works and gives you a different, slightly deeper flavor.
  • Apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon): Don’t skip it. This is the ingredient stopping the sauce from being cloying, and without it you’ve just got sweet on sweet. White vinegar or lemon juice work in a pinch.
  • Garlic powder (½ teaspoon) and onion powder (½ teaspoon): Into the sauce, giving it a savory backbone under all that sweetness.

How To Make Honey BBQ Chicken Tenders

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F, if yours needs it. Some models do, some don’t, and the manual will tell you. If yours requires it, don’t skip it, because putting breaded chicken into a cold air fryer is how you get pale, soft coating.

Pull the tendons out of the tenders. Ten seconds each, and worth it.

Set up 3 bowls. Flour with the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika in one. Beaten eggs in the second. Breadcrumbs in the third. Line them up in that order and accept that one hand is about to get messy.

Bread each tender. Flour first, shaking off the excess, then egg, then breadcrumbs. Press the crumbs on properly at the end so they actually stick instead of falling off in the basket.

Into the basket in a single layer, with space between each one so the air can move around them. If they’re touching, they steam instead of crisping. Cook in batches if you need to, and it’s better to do 2 proper batches than 1 crowded one.

Spray them. A light, even coating of cooking spray over the top. This is what turns pale breadcrumbs into golden crunchy ones and it’s the step people skip and then wonder about.

Cook 8 to 10 minutes at 400°F, flipping halfway through. They’re done at 165°F on an instant read thermometer. Tenders are thin and they go from perfect to dry quickly, so start checking at 8 minutes rather than trusting the clock.

Make the sauce while they cook. BBQ sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and onion powder into a small saucepan over low heat. Whisk it together and let it go 5 to 6 minutes, stirring now and then, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon.

Then decide how you’re saucing them. Toss for sticky, serve on the side for crunchy, or brush and return to the air fryer for 1 to 2 minutes if you want both. All three are covered above.

Things Worth Knowing

  • Pull the tendons. Ten seconds each and it’s the difference between good tenders and ones with a chewy bit.
  • Don’t crowd the basket. Air needs to move around each tender. Two batches beats one crowded one every time.
  • Spray them properly. Dry breadcrumbs stay pale and chalky. The spray is what makes them golden.
  • Season the flour with real amounts. Most of it stays in the bowl, so a timid hand there means bland chicken.
  • Check the temperature, not the clock. 165°F. Tenders are thin and they overcook fast.
  • Sauce at the last possible moment. Warm sauce softens breading within a few minutes. Or brush and give them 2 minutes back in the air fryer to set it.
  • Don’t skip the vinegar in the sauce. It’s the only thing standing between you and pure sweetness.

Variations

  • Spicy honey BBQ. A teaspoon of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne into the sauce. Sweet heat is a very good combination and it takes 5 seconds.
  • Hot honey. Skip the BBQ sauce entirely and use ½ cup of honey with a teaspoon of chili flakes and a splash of vinegar, warmed through.
  • Buffalo. Same tenders, different direction. Toss them in buffalo sauce with a little melted butter.
  • Extra crunchy. Use panko and double dredge, going flour, egg, breadcrumbs, egg, breadcrumbs again. Messier and noticeably crunchier.
  • In the oven. 400°F on a wire rack over a baking sheet, 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway. The rack matters, because tenders sitting directly on a pan go soft underneath.
  • Gluten free. A cup for cup gluten free flour and gluten free breadcrumbs. Check the BBQ sauce label too, since some contain wheat.

What To Serve With Them

Chicken tenders want something starchy and something crunchy, and then you’re done.

Fries are the obvious answer and nobody’s ever objected. Mac and cheese is the richer version of the same idea. If you’re doing this as an actual dinner rather than a snack, a pile of coleslaw next to them cuts through the sweet sauce nicely.

For dipping, ranch alongside the honey BBQ gives people options, and there’s always someone at the table who wants ranch.

Celery and carrot sticks if you want something fresh on the plate, though I’d be lying if I said they get eaten first.

Make Ahead And Storage

Make ahead: you can bread the tenders up to 4 hours early and keep them on a tray in the fridge. The coating actually grips better for sitting. The sauce keeps in the fridge for a week, so that’s easy to do in advance too.

Fridge: 4 days in an airtight container. Store them unsauced if you can, since sauced tenders go soft.

Freezer: 3 months. Freeze them cooked and unsauced on a tray until firm, then bag them so they’re not stuck together.

Reheating, and the air fryer wins: 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes and they come back genuinely crispy. The oven at 350°F for about 7 minutes also works well. From frozen, 350°F for around 20 minutes. The microwave gets them hot and turns the coating soft, so I’d only use it if you’re eating them sauced anyway.

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) if your model requires preheating.
  • Pull the white tendon out of each of the 1½ pounds chicken tenders. Grip the end with a paper towel, hold the meat down with a fork, and pull.
  • In a shallow dish, combine the 1 cup all purpose flour, salt and pepper to taste, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, and ½ teaspoon smoked paprika. Beat the 2 large eggs in a second shallow dish. Place the 1 cup breadcrumbs in a third.
  • Dredge each tender in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess. Dip it into the beaten eggs, then into the breadcrumbs, pressing gently so they stick.
  • Arrange the breaded tenders in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them so they aren't touching. Cook in batches if needed. Spray them lightly and evenly with cooking spray.
  • Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and an instant read thermometer reads 165°F (74°C). Start checking at 8 minutes.
  • While the tenders cook, whisk the ½ cup BBQ sauce, ¼ cup honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon onion powder together in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  • Choose how to sauce them. Toss the tenders in the sauce for a sticky coating and serve immediately, or serve the sauce on the side for dipping so they stay crisp. For both, brush the sauce onto the tenders and return them to the air fryer at 400°F for 1 to 2 minutes to set the glaze.

Equipment

  • Cosori 9-in-1 TurboBlaze Air Fryer 6 Qt

Notes

  1. Pull the tendons. Ten seconds per tender and it removes the one chewy bit that spoils a mouthful.
  2. Don’t crowd the basket. Tenders need space for the air to circulate. Two batches beats one crowded one.
  3. Spray them properly. Dry breadcrumbs stay pale and chalky in an air fryer. The spray is what makes them golden.
  4. Season the flour with real amounts. Most of it stays behind in the bowl, so a timid hand means bland chicken.
  5. 165°F, and check early. Tenders are thin and go from perfect to dry quickly.
  6. Sauce at the last minute. Warm sauce softens the coating within a few minutes. Brush and air fry 1 to 2 minutes if you want sticky and crisp.
  7. Leftover breading is normal. A cup each of flour and breadcrumbs is more than you’ll use, and that’s better than running short.
  8. Reheat in the air fryer: 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes. It’s the best method by a distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why aren’t my chicken tenders crispy?

Usually one of 3 things. The basket was too crowded so they steamed instead of crisping, you skipped the cooking spray so the breadcrumbs stayed dry and pale, or you tossed them in warm sauce and the sauce softened the coating. Give them space, spray them, and sauce at the last minute.

Should I toss them in the sauce or serve it on the side?

Toss them if everyone’s eating right away and you want them sticky. Serve it on the side if you want them to stay crunchy. Or brush the sauce on and give them 1 to 2 minutes back in the air fryer, which sets it into a glaze and gets you both.

What’s the white thing running through chicken tenders?

That’s a tendon, and it stays chewy no matter how you cook it. Grab the end with a paper towel, hold the meat down with a fork, and pull. Ten seconds and the texture is noticeably better.

Can I make these in the oven?

Yes. 400°F on a wire rack over a baking sheet, 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway. Use the rack, because tenders sitting flat on a pan go soggy underneath.

How do I know when they’re done?

165°F on an instant read thermometer. Tenders are thin so they cook fast and dry out faster, and I’d start checking at 8 minutes rather than waiting for the timer.

Can I use chicken breast instead of tenders?

Absolutely, and it’s often cheaper. Cut boneless skinless breasts into long strips about the thickness of a tender. Try to keep them even so they cook at the same rate.

How do I make it gluten free?

Gluten free flour and breadcrumbs, both cup for cup swaps. Check your BBQ sauce label too, since some brands contain wheat.
