Skinny Double Chocolate Banana Bread – a sinful banana bread loaded with chocolate and bananas, yet skinnified. Must I say more?
So January came with the usual resolution of eating healthier, as you all know. But it’s tough to really follow through when you have a sweet tooth and you crave that chocolate, oh sweet milky chocolate. I’m a milk chocolate girl all the way, yes I can have dark chocolate, and will occasionally, but give me milk chocolate and I’ll love you forever. What’s a girl to do in these situations when you’ve got that sweet tooth. Simple my friends. You make double chocolate banana bread. It’s somewhat healthy, so don’t feel too bad about it.
No, really, it is. There’s no oil or butter in this banana bread. Just applesauce. Lately I’ve been using applesauce a lot in my baking and I have to tell you that I don’t miss the butter or the oil. The cakes or muffins or whatever you’re making, still come out moist and delicious. So why not!
But this double chocolate banana bread is so freaking good, I can barely keep my grubby little paws off of it. But it’s ok. Because it’s amazing, it’s sinful, but healthy. Banana + chocolate = pure unadulterated health. Now you know this was a complete success with hubs, since he’s the biggest chocoholic person I know and has been going through withdrawals during the entire month of January, since he’s stopped buying loads of chocolate. But this hit the spot, cured those chocolate cravings of his, well at least for now.
Weekend is almost here, so go make this my friends and have a slice. And if you’re brave, or naughty, pour some chocolate sauce, or serve this with a scoop of ice cream, because really, this is more like a brownie. But who needs to know that. At 144 calories a slice, you can afford to be naughty.

I had bananas I froze a long time ago and usually regular banana bread doesn’t get eaten too fast. This disappeared within days. I froze the other loaf because I doubled the recipe so I’m not tempted to eat it. If you’re looking for a new way to use up old bananas, try this, perfectly moist and not overly sweet
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Freezing the other loaf is a smart move. Thanks for trying the recipe!
Hi Jo. I have made this delicious banana bread several times. Just trying to watch my serving size, so I was wondering based on your nutritional breakdown what is your serving size/ weight on a slice.
Hi Sherry,
We never weighed the slices, but the average slice would be about 1 inch in thickness and would get about 10-12 slices per loaf. Hope this helps!
hi Jo, made this to gift a friend who loves my original banana bread, but is recently, like everyone with covid weight, worried about it being fattening!
i made 1 8×4 pan and 1 mini, and barely made it, so think it would all fit into 1 8×4 rather than a large loaf pan! also used 1 C of chips between the batter and on top, and it smells great,, but wont know until i taste a bit of the mini myself, that i normally NEVER do, but been looking for a new recipe, so want to get friends opinions as everything i bake is gifted to friends, doctors offices, therapist, dental, neighbors, etc…i never bake for myself! thx very much; will try some of your other recipes shortly!:):
Glad you liked it!!
Thanks Jo, it was absolutely worth the wait! Delicious! I ate almost half of it myself last night. Will definitely be making this again. Thanks for the great recipe. Loved your chocolate zucchini bread as well.
Thanks, Debbie! 🙂
Can’t rate the taste yet, still waiting for it to finish cooking. Either you have your temperature or your cook time wrong. I am at almost 50 minutes and it’s still not ready.
You’re right, the time was wrong, recipe fixed now. It should take 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes, but it depends on what you bake it in, time could vary.
Made this today and it’s amazing!
Hi Jo
Would you tell me can I use bundt cake pan or round cake pan instead of loaf pan and what about the siza of pan ?and what about your poppy seed lemon cake?
Absolutely you can, for both! If you’re using a round cake pan, go with a 9″ pan.
I have tried lots of different skinny chocolate and skinny chocolate/banana combo breads and muffins, and I have to say I think this one is my favorite! My twin 3 year old love it, too. It’s terribly amazing still warm out of the oven when the chocolate chips are all melty. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!
You’re welcome, glad you guys liked it. 🙂
Made it. Taste great, but I gotta wonder. One CUP of chips. By my calculation, that’s about 60 calories a slice for the chips alone?
Calories are calculated using caloriecount.com. Remember there are 12 servings in this bread, so the chips alone are 27 calories per slice, although calories could vary depending on products used.
This looks delicious but the calorie count is sadly way off! 1 cup of regular ol’ semi-sweet chocolate chips is 1,120 calories, so 93 calories per serving if you split the recipe into 12. I entered the recipe into the MyFitnessPal recipe builder (which I use for everything and find very reliable) and it was 238 calories/slice.
According to calorie count it’s 144 calories per slice. Probably all these programs are different though, and calories always depend on brands used and so on.
did you ever think to substitute for dark choc chips? Or better yet not make/eat it at all you’re gonna whine about the calories?
Jo didn’t make you click on this recipe, you did it yourself. It’s a sweet treat, only lightened up. Expecting a sweet to be incredibly low on cals (or even sugar) is unrealistic, bc its necessary. Next time try eating ice if calories are that significant to you.
the dbl.skinny choc.sweet bread. Can I sub. splenda for reg. sugar?
I cannot use reg. sugar? Also can I use Almond flour instead of
reg. flour?
It IS hard to keep grubby paws off this one. LOL
