My homemade Apple Fritters are pure comfort. These fritters will perfectly satisfy your sweet tooth. They’re ready in minutes with a simple batter that whips together in seconds!
I’ve probably mentioned this before, but my very first job was actually at a bakery. I was 14 years old and I used to work the cash register. It was a great job! The work was easy and most importantly I got to be around incredible baked goods all day.
Fresh bread, clover leaf buns, macaroons, and most delicious of all, apple fritters! These apple fritters were huge and completely glazed in a sweet icing. They were so delicious and one of my favorite things to eat. However, I decided to make my own version, a lot smaller but still as delicious. Not to toot my own horn, but I must have the best apple fritter recipe.
What Are Apple Fritters?
Every country has their own version of a fritter. They are basically a batter with a sweet or savory mix-in, then deep fried. In North America our fritters are usually sweet and have a similar flavor to donuts. They’re oh-so-soft with that delicious golden brown fried exterior. My mouth is watering just thinking about them!
How to Make Homemade Apple Fritters
Want to blow your friends and family away with bakery quality goods without slaving away for hours in the kitchen? This is the recipe you need!
Start off by heating a large pot of vegetable oil to 375 F. Then, give your dry ingredients a quick mix in a large bowl. Whisk the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl. Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir everything together with a spatula or wooden spoon. The batter is quite thick, so a whisk wouldn’t be ideal.
Now you can fold in the apples! Make sure they are evenly dispersed throughout the batter. Take a large cookie scoop and very carefully drop balls of batter directly into the hot oil. It’s best to let them drop slowly and as closely to the oil as you can to avoid splashes. Use a chop stick or skewer to flip the fritters once they’ve browned. Keep a close eye on them! They cook nice and fast.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the apple fritters from the oil, and work in batches as to not over crowd the pot. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, and these babies are ready to serve!
Can I Glaze These Apple Fritters?
If you want to amp up the sweetness a bit, a glaze would work beautifully for these fritters.
Whisk together 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and 1-2 tbsp milk until you’ve reached your desired consistency. When the fritters have cooled enough to handle them, dip them directly in the glaze and let them fully cool on a wire rack to let the excess drip off. You can use two forks to glaze the apple fritters to avoid messy, sticky hands.
Tips for Making the Best Apple Fritters
- Using a thermometer to make sure your oil is a perfect temperature helps out a lot to make sure you don’t burn or undercook your fritters.
- I used Granny Smith apples for this recipe. Honey crisp would also work. These types of apples are great because they don’t get mushy and are able to hold their form after frying!
- When choosing an oil to fry with, I suggest either vegetable, peanut, or canola oil. These oils have high smoke points so they won’t burn, and also have a very mild flavor which won’t affect the fritters.
- These apple fritters only take 2-3 minutes to cook fully, so it’s better to do more small batches than try to cram too many fritters in the pot at once.
How to Store Apple Fritters
Wherever you keep these apple fritters, make sure to store them in an airtight container so they don’t dry out. They will last 2 days at room temperature, 1 week in the fridge, and 2-3 months in the freezer. If you freeze them, thaw them by leaving them at room temperature for a few hours until they’re soft.

Hi Jo,
My name is Monica.
I’m writing this review to let you know this is by far the best recipe for apple fritter balls I’ve ever tried!!! My family devoured them in one night. Everyone loved them so much they asked me to make them again tonight, so here I am pleasing my family (which I love so much) making these amazing fritters tonight. I’m the weird one in the family that doesn’t like deserts. But I love these apple fritter bites. I can eat one or two, and I’m satisfied. I followed the recipe exactly, only adding 2 tsp. nutmeg., I saved your page so I can always refer back.
Thanks for the great recipe.
May the Lord bless the works of your hands.
The Wrights
Thank you so much, Monica! I’m so glad to hear that you and your family enjoyed this recipe. 🙂
I made these tonight. I had to decrease the temperature to 300F and cook them for about 2 minutes each side. They were very good though.
I made these this morning and they were delicious! I made a half-recipe, with some leftover stewed apples (Granny Smiths, peeled, cubed and sauteed in butter, sugar and cinnamon) instead of fresh apples. My half-recipe yielded 20 fritters and I did find that I had to fry them for considerably longer than 2-3 minutes for them to be done inside–however, though they got very dark brown and crisp outside (which we loved) they never burnt. We rolled them in cinnamon sugar. This is now my go-to fritter recipe! Thank you!
Haven’t tried yet I have a question: Can you use comestock apple pie filling?
Thank yOU
jIMMY
We haven’t used apple pie filling, but I have a feeling the batter might become too runny. You can cut down on the milk and add a bit more flour until the consistency looks right. Take a look at the video as a reference 🙂
can you use frozen apple pieces for this recipe?
Sure!
I just made these and OMG they are so good… Love this recipe.
I can’t wait to try this recipe. I am a great cook and I have to say I love your recipes. I’m trying my best not to fry that often these days and I bought an airfryer. Do you think I can try to make them in there? Thanks Jo
I really have no idea, haven’t used one yet!
Amazing! Super Easy Recipe!!!I had everything I needed right in the fridge and cupboards…Give It A Try!!! SO YUMMY!!!
Jo, do you think these would work in an air fryer?
I’m not sure, I just bought an air fryer but haven’t used it yet so I’m not sure how it works exactly.
Simple and yummy recipe.
Tried the Ampple fritters and they were delicious.
what are the best kind of apples to use?
I would go with a Granny Smith because they’re tart and they will stay firm when heat is involved.
How many fritters does this recipe make?
Depends on the size of your fritters, but I think you should get a couple dozen out of it.
I made these tonight and they were all gobbled up within seconds! Followed the recipe exactly except I added a 1/2 tsp of nutmeg to the batter for a slight nuttier flavour. I also love that this recipe uses icing sugar instead of glaze as it’s not nearly as sugary. Would make again!
Thanks so much for commenting Jen, appreciate it very much and so glad you liked the Apple Fritters.
