Best BLT Sandwich Recipe

If you like sandwiches and love the classics like my Club Sandwich and Egg Salad, then here is another for you to try! The BLT sandwich is famous and for good reason. It’s absolutely delicious and oh so simple. And with just a bit of bacon, lettuce, and tomato you can make yourself this yummy classic.

However, because this sandwich has so few ingredients, it’s important to use better quality ingredients for the perfect BLT. This means that using thick-cut bacon is your best choice as well as super fresh lettuce and tomato. And the sandwich bread used should be thicker sliced. All these little things will make a difference in the outcome of this simple sandwich. But don’t get me wrong your sandwich will still be totally yummy even if you use thin cut bread and any old bacon.

Not to mention, how versatile this BLT recipe is! You can serve it as is for any meal of the day. But it’s also easy to dress up too! Add an egg and you’ve got a complete breakfast or layer on a few slices of turkey and you’ve got a heartier lunch!

Why You’ll Love This BLT Sandwich

  • Quick and Easy! You only need 6 basic ingredients and about 20 minutes to whip together this delicious classic sandwich recipe. And you can cook the bacon any way you like.
  • Classic Deliciousness! The BLT is a well-known way to take some crispy perfectly cooked bacon and turn it into an incredibly good sandwich with a bit of lettuce and tomato.
  • Crowd Pleaser! Everyone loves a good BLT and you can easily customize the sandwiches by adding some avocado, cheddar cheese, egg, or anything you like.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients needed to make BLT sandwich.
  • Bacon – Thick-cut bacon makes the best BLT, but any type of bacon can be used including turkey bacon. I myself love to make Air Fryer Bacon for less mess.
  • Bread – Thick sliced bread works best to maintain the structure of the sandwich. For a delicious homemade sandwich bread, try my recipe.
  • Butter – Always use unsalted butter unless a recipe calls for salted. Doing so helps to control the level of added sodium.
  • Mayonnaise – You can use any store-bought mayo or make your own homemade mayonnaise.
  • Tomato – Sliced tomato adds a bit of freshness and a layer of flavor.
  • Lettuce – I love to use butter lettuce or green leaf lettuce, but any kind of fresh lettuce will work perfectly including iceberg lettuce.

How To Make A BLT Sandwich

This classic sandwich is a cinch to make! All you need is some cooked bacon, some bread, and a few veggies and you’ll have a tasty lunch ready to serve in no time!

Cook The Bacon

process shots showing how to make BLT sandwich.

The first step is to cook the bacon! You can either fry it in a skillet, cook it in the oven, or air fry it! I always air fry mine and it’s super easy. All you have to do is place the bacon in the basket of your air fryer in a single layer and then cook it for 5 to 8 minutes at 400°F (204°C) or until it’s cooked to your liking.

Toast The Bread

But don’t just pop the bread in the toaster. Lightly spread both sides of the bread with butter and then toast them over medium-high heat in a dry skillet until they are golden brown. You don’t have to toast your bread this way, but I find that it adds another layer of delicious flavor.

Assemble The Sandwiches

Now, let’s make some BLT sandwiches! To start, put 4 slices of the toasted bread on a cutting board and spread each one with half a tablespoon of mayonnaise. Now, top each slice of bread with 2 leaves of lettuce, some fresh sliced tomato, and strips of bacon. Then spread the remaining mayonnaise on the other 4 slices of toasted bread and place them mayo side down over the sandwiches. Finally, cut all the assembled sandwiches in half and then serve them immediately.

What Does BLT Sandwich Stand For?

You may have figured it out, but BLT stands for the three main ingredients of the sandwich, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Of course, a BLT almost always includes mayonnaise as well. But without the three main ingredients, you don’t have a BLT.

What Is The Best Way To Cook Bacon?

Overall this is a personal choice. You can cook bacon in a frying pan, in the oven, or in an air fryer. But for the most even cooking, it’s best to cook bacon in the oven on a rimmed baking sheet or in an air fryer. Yet, some people still swear by the skillet. However, I prefer to cook my bacon using the air fryer.

Expert Tips

  1. Drain the bacon. Make sure to place your cooked bacon on some paper towels so that the excess fat can drain. Not doing so can make your sandwich greasy.
  2. Use unsalted butter. Bacon is naturally salty and mayo has salt in it too, so use unsalted butter to toast your bread to prevent the BLT from being oversalted.
  3. Add some avocado. If you want to make this classic a bit more modern just add some fresh sliced avocado to the sandwich along with the lettuce and tomato.

Storage

Assembled BLT sandwiches are best eaten right away. However, leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just remove them from the fridge a few minutes prior to eating to allow them to come to room temperature. You can also remove the bacon from the BLT and reheat it in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
