Everything Bagel Seasoning – It’s everything you love on a bagel right at your finger tips! This seasoning, flavored with garlic and onion, is delicious over a great variety of foods. Homemade bread, breakfast, even some simple roasted veggies.

With the name “everything“, there aren’t too many rules and regulations regarding what exactly must go on an everything bagel. With such vague rules, this recipe has, surprisingly, fallen into a pretty standard mold. Sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onion, garlic, and big flaky pieces of salt. This simple mixture of flavors has become a favorite!

It’s been such a consistent favorite, Trader Joe’s started the fabulous trend of “everything bagel seasoning”. This simple and genius idea blew up and could be found in everyone’s pantry! So, why not learn how to make it yourself? You probably have these ingredients begging to be used up before they stale. Give them a purpose as glorious as this!

Ingredients

Keep scrolling down to the printable recipe card for FULL ingredient amounts and instructions or click the “Jump to Recipe” button at the top of the page!

  • Seeds – White sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, and poppy seeds. If you have some in your pantry, make sure to give them a smell first to make sure they aren’t stale.
  • Onion & garlic – Find the minced and dehydrated pieces- not powder.
  • Salt – Flaky sea salt or course salt.

How to make everything bagel seasoning

  1. Add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix until well combined. Transfer to a jar and store.

The ingredients may start to separate themselves a bit since this is a flavoring made with bigger pieces. Give it a quick stir every time before you use it.

How to make roasted everything bagel seasoning

  1. Add the sesame seeds and poppy seeds to a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Keep the seeds moving constantly, either by stirring or shaking the skillet, until the white sesame seeds turn golden brown.
  3. Remove the seeds from the skillet and let them cool down in a bowl or on a plate. Mix in the rest of the ingredients and store.

What to make with everything bagel seasoning

Besides the obvious, you know, bagels, you can sprinkle this over homemade bread recipes:

  • Soft Pretzels
  • Pretzel Bites
  • Soft Buttermilk Dinner Rolls
  • Classic Dinner Rolls
  • Homemade Slider Buns
  • No Knead Bread

Or you can try using your seasoning over:

  • Avocado toast
  • Avocado slices
  • Sliced tomato
  • Roasted veggies
  • Salad
  • Eggs
  • Popcorn
  • Hummus
  • Sandwich flavor booster

How to make dehydrated minced garlic

We’ve all seen dehydrated onion in the store, but what about garlic? This is the one ingredient in the recipe that can be difficult to find. You know what’s abundant no matter where you are? Fresh garlic! So, where there’s a problem, there’s a solution.

  1. Mince the garlic and spread in a thin, even layer over a tray in your dehydrator.
  2. Set the temperature to 140F or 70C. Dehydrate for 8-10 hours, or until the garlic is crisped and completely dried out.

You can follow these steps in your oven if the temperature is able to be set as low as 140F.

Storage

Make sure to store this blend in a jar with a twist-to-seal lid. The seeds tend to stale if exposed to air, so we want to make sure your delicious seasoning is airtight. Store in a cool, dark place such as your pantry or spice drawer.

Since we’re dealing with seeds rather than just spices, this seasoning will last you 6-12 months. It won’t go bad, necessarily, it will just become stale.

Make sure the jar you’re storing the seasoning in has completely dried if you’ve recently washed it. You can leave it upside down in your drying rack for a good 20 minutes to be extra cautious.

Thanks for the great recipe. My grocery store doesn’t seem to have the ready made kind, and this is so easy, so much less expensive, and every bit as good. I’m using it tonight for crispy roasted chickpeas, but I’ve also rolled a log of goat cheese in it for a delicious and different addition to a cheese board.

Jo, I love the “everything but the bagel” idea, but my Dr. says “no added salt, at all”. Do you think this could be OK if I used something like Mrs. Dash instead of the salt?
