Here’s a recipe for a simple Mulled Wine that’s sure to warm you during the holiday season! So if you’re looking to party like it’s 1899, nothing beats this traditional winter cocktail.

Mulled Wine - a simple mulled wine recipe that's sure to warm you during the holiday season! So if you're looking to party like it's 1899, nothing beats a good mulled wine.

You know that when the chilly winter weather hits that nothing, absolutely  nothing could be cozier than a warm mug of mulled wine. And it would surely warm you up from head to toe, guaranteed. I for one love it and it’s something we make every single winter.

Nothing beats cozying up by the fireplace with a cup of this mulled wine, not to mention how romantic it could be if you do this with your significant other.

But this hot toddy is so simple to make and what a holiday treat. It’s typically made with red wine which is sweetened and spiced with spices such as star anise, cloves and cinnamon. It is then heated and served warm. Total treat and perfect for a cold winter night.

What Is Mulled Wine?

While you’ll find many different types of mulled wine recipes, the basic ingredients will always be the same. I used a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon here but any red wine would work really, like a Merlot or even a Zinfandel.  I also added a bit of citrus to mine and it was just delicious.

If you’ve never had this for the holidays, it’s time to make some new memories. Cozy up by the fireplace, turn on It’s a Wonderful Life and enjoy a cup of this wine. You won’t regret it.

Ingredients

  • Red wine – I used Cabernet Sauvignon for this recipe today as we want something nice and full bodied.
  • Brandy – This will add tons of dimension to our mulled wine today, be sure to pick some up – any kind you’d like.
  • Spices – Cinnamon sticks and star anise.
  • Liquids – Water and honey, believe me the honey will help round out all the flavors we’re going for today.
  • Citrus – Slice up some lemons and some oranges to add dimension and brightness to our mulled wine.

How To Make Mulled Wine

  1. Combine the mulled wine: Add the first 7 ingredients to a saucepan. Juice the lemon and orange and add the juice to the pan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat then reduce to low heat and simmer for another 15 minutes.
  3. Serve warm with orange slices.

Some Tips And Tricks

  1. Be sure to strain out those spices before drinking. A soggy star anise will be an unpleasant surprise otherwise!
  2. Don’t go overboard on the spices, it will be tempting to throw in a ton of flavor additions but moderation is key here.
  3. Throw these together in the slow cooker for a nice and well developed mulled wine.

Storing Leftovers

You can store this bad boy in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just be sure to allow it to cool to room temperature before transferring to an airtight container.
