Let’s be honest, we all love a good appetizer or snack, whether it’s at a party, game day, or even just a Wednesday night. Pigs in a blanket are satisfying no matter what! This recipe will become one of your favourites when you find out how simple they are to make, and especially how delicious they are to enjoy.
What Are Pigs in a Blanket?
Sounds funny, doesn’t it? The term “pigs in a blanket” typically refers to hot dogs, in this case mini cocktail smokies, wrapped in dough. There are a variety of different ways you can make these, some may include using Vienna sausages, cocktail sausages, breakfast/link sausages or classic hotdogs baked inside some type of dough; usually biscuit dough or croissant dough.
Mini hot dogs are NOT just for kids – these pigs in a blanket are the perfect bite-sized snack/appetizer for anyone!
Ingredients
- Mini Cocktail Smokies – Can be replaced by Vienna sausage, link sausage, hotdog etc. You can even use regular sized smokies and cut cut them in half or thirds.
- Pillsbury Crescent Rolls – You can use any type of dough, I find this to be the most simple.
- Egg – Beaten for egg wash.
- Sesame/Poppy Seeds – Optional.
- Coarse Salt – To taste, also optional.
How To Make Pigs In A Blanket

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make my own dough?
If you want to amplify your pigs in a blanket experience and go ALL out – you can absolutely make your own dough for these. Whether you want to try your hand at making dough or you are an experienced dough maker my Best Ever Dinner Crescents recipe could be of use! It will take a while longer if you want to make your own dough, but who am I to stop you!?
What else can I use besides crescent rolls?
You can use any biscuit dough, but a great substitute would be puff pastry. Pizza dough is another great option.
What should I serve these with?
These pigs in a blanket are great with mustard or ketchup, but one of my favorite dips is cheese sauce. Other options are BBQ sauce or even ranch dressing.
Tips
- Make ahead – you can make these in advance and store in the fridge! If you are storing them longer than overnight – you can make them, freeze on trays and then store in freezer bags for up to a month! Easy snacks ready to be baked and served hot at anytime! No need to let them thaw before baking, just allow for a slightly longer baking time.
- If you can’t find mini cocktail smokies, you can use different types of sausage or hot dogs. Use your favorite sausage, such as a chicken sausage, andouille or even smoked sausages.
Leftovers
All leftovers should be stored in an airtight container or wrapped in foil/cling wrap (tightly) in the fridge for up to a week! Again, you can freeze these little pigs for up to a month if you want to keep them longer!
You can heat refrigerated pigs in a blanket by microwaving them, placing them in a crockpot on warm for 20-30 minutes, or you can reheat them in the oven. If using the oven, place them on a baking sheet at 350° and bake for 8-10 minutes.

Is there cheese in the recipe?
There’s no cheese in the ingredients, the sausages I used had cheese in them. 🙂
Looks great.. But one question on freezing….do you freeze AFTER you cook or before. Love the idea of freezing….but want to be sure I do it right. Thanks a bunch
