FAQs & Expert Tips
FAQs
Tex Mex is a fusion of Mexican and American cuisines, creating such a delicious blend of cultures! You’ll notice many well known Tex Mex dishes on menus at restaurants such as queso, chili con carne, fajitas, and chimichangas.
Since Tex Mex a fusion of American and Mexican cuisine, there are definitely similarities in the two, but many of the dishes are made differently in comparison. The most notable difference between Tex Mex and Mexican food is in the ingredients used. For one, the cheese is a huge giveaway! Tex Mex uses yellow cheese, whereas in Mexico, only white cheese is used; so if you see some cheddar cheese on your plate, you know it’s a Tex Mex kind of dish! The other notable difference between the two foods is found in the spices used. Cumin is used almost ALL of the time in Tex Mex, but isn’t as common in Mexican cuisine.
Sprinkle this seasoning over chicken, fish, shrimp, or flank steak, toss it with your veggies before roasting, you can truly use this blend anywhere you see fit! Looking for a specific recipe to use it in? Try my Tex Mex Stuffed Peppers, Tex Mex Potato Salad, or Tex Mex Chilaquiles!
Of course you could store all those ingredients separately and measure out the ratios each time, but combining them all in a spice jar makes for an easy, convenient seasoning you can reach for without any hassle, and saves you a lot of time in the kitchen!
Tips
- You can use this seasoning as a substitute in any recipe that uses taco, or fajita seasoning, depending on your preference.
- Once you’ve made your Tex Mex seasoning, feel free to make adjustments and add more, less, or remove some of the ingredients depending on your preference.
- I prefer to store my spice blends in jars, as the screw-top lid keeps them most fresh.
- If you’re using a freshly washed container, make sure it’s 100% dry before pouring in the seasoning. I’ll dry my jar with a kitchen towel, then let is sit upside down on a drying rack for 20-30 minutes to be extra sure. If there is moisture present in the container, you risk having the spice mixture spoiled.
- Mark the date on the jar that you mixed up your blend to keep better track of its age! You can give it the good ol’ sniff test before using once it gets older to see if it’s still usable.
Storing
Whatever vessel you choose to store your Tex Mex seasoning in, make sure it’s airtight. Store in a cool, dry, dark place. A pantry or drawer is a perfect.
When properly stored, Tex Mex seasoning will stay fresh for 6 months. Since it’s completely dry, it will never go “bad” or rotten, it’ll simply go a bit stale and lose its potency.
