Holy Guacamole!

I find the best guacamole is made with simple ingredients, which is exactly how this guacamole came to be! Fresh avocados and tomatoes, bright lime, punchy cilantro, spicy jalapeno and bold onion seasoned with a little salt and pepper. It couldn’t be easier, and it couldn’t be any more delicious.

I have made guacamole more times than I can count, it’s one of my all time favorite dips. I have a couple, more elaborate guacamole recipes on my blog, such as the Joe Montana’s Touchdown Guacamole or my Cheesy Guacamole, but I wanted to keep this version simple and satisfying. Don’t worry – if you want to beef up your guac, I’ve included a list of additions you can check out below!

Why You’ll Love This Guacamole

  • Unbeatable Freshness and Flavor! Trust me when I say that this homemade guacamole is a total game-changer. It’s so fresh, creamy, and full of flavor that it’ll put store-bought guac to shame. Once you’ve tried it, there’s no going back!
  • Customizable to Your Taste! The beauty of this guac recipe lies in its simplicity and flexibility. You can easily customize it to your taste buds, making it as mild or as fiery as you like. Plus, you can experiment with additional ingredients for a unique twist!
  • Healthy and Nutritious! Not only is this guacamole incredibly tasty, but it’s also packed with nutrients. Avocados are rich in healthy fats, fiber, and essential vitamins, making this guac a nutritious and delicious choice for snacking or adding to your favorite dishes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

overhead shot of all the ingredients needed to make guacamole
  • Avocados – ripe, peeled and pitted
  • Tomatoes – medium roma tomatoes, diced
  • Jalapeno – medium jalapeno, seeded and diced
  • Onion – white or red, diced
  • Cilantro – freshly chopped
  • Lime – juiced
  • Salt & Pepper – to taste

How To Make Guacamole

detailed process shots showing how to make guacamole
  1. Mix Ingredients: Add the avocados to a bowl and lightly mash. To it add the tomatoes, jalapeno pepper, onion, cilantro, lime juice and lightly mix.
  2. Season: Season with salt and pepper as needed. Chill until ready to use.
  3. Serve: Serve with crackers or tortilla chips.

Expert Tips

  1. Room temperature ingredients: For optimal flavor and texture, bring your ingredients (especially the avocados) to room temperature before preparing the guacamole.
  2. Crushing the garlic: If you’d like to add garlic to your guac, crush it with a garlic press or mince it very finely to avoid any overpowering chunks in your dip.
  3.  Ripening avocados: If your avocados are not yet ripe, place them in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana to speed up the ripening process. The ethylene gas released by the fruit will help ripen the avocados more quickly.
  4. Chunky vs. smooth texture: Adjust the texture of your guacamole by mashing the avocados more or less, depending on whether you prefer a chunky or smooth consistency.
  5. Serving presentation: For an eye-catching presentation, serve your guacamole in a molcajete (a traditional Mexican mortar and pestle) or a hollowed-out avocado shell.
  6. Reviving leftover guacamole: If your leftover guacamole has developed a thin layer of browning, simply scrape off the top layer and give it a good stir. The vibrant green guacamole underneath will still be fresh and delicious.
  7. Creative uses for guacamole: Think beyond just dipping! Guacamole can be used as a topping for burgers, sandwiches, and salads, or as a filling for deviled eggs and sushi rolls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does homemade guacamole last in the fridge?

Homemade guacamole can last for up to 2-3 days in the fridge if stored properly. Use an airtight container, press plastic wrap onto the surface of the guacamole, and refrigerate.

Can I freeze guacamole?

Yes, you can freeze it, although the texture may change slightly upon thawing. To freeze, place the guacamole in an airtight container or a heavy-duty freezer bag, leaving some space for expansion. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guac to minimize air exposure, and freeze for up to 3 months. To thaw, place the container in the fridge for a few hours or overnight, then stir well before serving.

Why does guacamole turn brown?

Guacamole turns brown due to oxidation, which occurs when the avocado is exposed to air. The browning is a result of the enzymes in the avocado reacting with oxygen. Adding lime or lemon juice, which is high in acid, helps slow down this process.

How To Serve

I love to serve this with the classics: tortilla chips and pita chips, but I also love to serve it with crostini! Cut up a French baguette, lightly drizzle some olive oil over the slices, then season with salt and pepper. I put them on a baking sheet and under the broiler for about a minute per side, trust me when I say you might like this better than tortilla chips.

Storage/Make Ahead

To store guacamole and keep it fresh, follow these steps:

  1. Add a little extra lime or lemon juice: The acidity in lime or lemon juice helps slow down the oxidation process, which causes the avocado to turn brown. Gently mix in the extra juice, making sure it coats the surface of the guacamole.
  2. Transfer it to an airtight container: Use a container that is just large enough to hold the guacamole, as this will minimize the amount of air exposure.
  3. Press plastic wrap onto the surface: Lay a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole, pressing down gently to remove any air pockets. This creates a barrier that helps prevent browning.
  4. Seal the container: Put the lid on the container, ensuring it is sealed tightly to keep air out.
  5. Refrigerate: Store the guac in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. The cold temperature helps slow down oxidation and keeps the guacamole fresher for longer.

Ingredients

  • 3 avocados (ripe, peeled and pitted)
  • 2 medium roma tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 medium jalapeno (seeded and diced)
  • ½ cup onion (diced, white or red)
  • 3 tablespoon cilantro (chopped)
  • 1 lime (juiced)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon pepper (or to taste)

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • Mix Ingredients: Add the avocados to a bowl and lightly mash. To it add the tomatoes, jalapeno pepper, onion, cilantro, lime juice and lightly mix.
  • Season: Season with salt and pepper as needed. Chill until ready to use.
  • Serve: Serve with crackers or tortilla chips.

Notes

  1. Choose ripe avocados: To get the best flavor and texture, use ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. Avoid overripe avocados, which can make your guacamole mushy.
  2. Prevent browning: To keep your guacamole fresh and green, add a little extra lime juice, which slows down the oxidation process. If storing, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to reduce air exposure and refrigerate.
  3. Customize heat level: Adjust the spiciness to your liking by adding more or less jalapeño. You can also use a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce to add heat.
  4. Fresh ingredients: Use fresh cilantro, tomatoes, and lime juice for the best flavor. Fresh ingredients make a noticeable difference in taste and quality.
  5. Taste and adjust: Don’t be afraid to taste your guacamole and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more salt, lime juice, or other ingredients to create your perfect flavor balance.
  6. Experiment with add-ins: Try adding other ingredients to your guacamole, such as diced mango, pomegranate seeds, or crumbled feta cheese for a unique twist.
  7. Serve with a variety: Offer a variety of dippers, such as tortilla chips, pita chips, cucumber slices, and carrot sticks, to cater to different tastes and dietary preferences.

Made this afternoon. Didn’t have the jalapeno pepper so I used a couple from a jar that I minced up. This was fabulous, just perfect. Thank you. Will definitely make again.
