Ham and Cheese Sliders

I always love a great sandwich, but my husband could eat them every single day. Needless to say he was extremely happy when I said I would be making these mini ones. This ham and cheese slider is such a classic, though. Hawaiian sweet rolls loaded with lots of ham, feel free to use your favorite ham, lots of Swiss cheese and the tops are finally brushed with some melted butter with mustard, Worcestershire and lots of poppy seed.

I love using Hawaiian sweet rolls because it has the perfect combination of a fluffy inner sweet core with the most most amazing outer crust, that is baked until a golden crisp. Don’t feel bad if you can’t find any though, simply use dinner rolls instead, or make your own using my recipe.

Ham And Cheese Sliders Highlights

✅ QUICK AND EASY. These very flavorful sliders are so quick and easy to make, only 5 minutes to prep, and a great way to perk up any snack, game day appetizer, or simply a weekday dinner.

✅ PERFECT FOR LEFTOVERS. Easily use sliced deli ham, but the perfect recipe for leftover ham.

✅ GREAT FOR LUNCHES. Kids and adults alike all seem to love a great ham and cheese. These work well not only because they are easy but also because you can freeze them for later.

Ingredients You’ll Need

overhead shot of ingredients needed to make ham and cheese sliders.
  • Butter – I’ve used unsalted melted butter as a base for the butter sauce.
  • Mustard – Dijon mustard is the perfect condiment to go with ham. Yellow mustard will also work if you’re not a fan of Dijon.
  • Garlic – A little garlic powder really pops the flavor of the sliders.
  • Poppy seeds – Poppy seeds for the butter mixture to provide a nutty flavor. Most people don’t realize they are also good for you as they’re rich in magnesium, calcium and fiber.
  • Chives – The addition of dried chives are mild with a hint of onion, and will provide some nice color.
  • Worcestershire – Using Worcestershire sauce in the butter mixture really amps up the flavor giving you that umami taste.
  • Salt/Pepper – To me, almost every sandwich needs a little salt and pepper.
  • Ham – I used thinly sliced deli ham but it’s a great use for leftover ham.
  • Cheese – These sliders are fantastic when paired with Swiss cheese. If you prefer other cheeses, use that.

How To Make Ham and Cheese Sliders

detailed process shots showing how to make ham and cheese sliders.

Prep the oven and baking dish. First, preheat your oven to 350°F. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Use a baking dish that’s big enough to fit your buns.

Make the butter sauce. To a small bowl, add the melted butter, mustard, garlic powder, poppy seeds, chives, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and whisk until combined. This will make the very flavorful butter mixture to brush over the sliders.

Cut the rolls. Do NOT pull the rolls apart. Using a serrated knife, slice the rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom part in the prepared baking dish, cut side up.

Assemble the sliders. Layer half the deli ham slices evenly over the buns. Next, layer all the cheese slices over the ham and top with remaining ham slices. Place the top of the buns over the sandwiches. See how easy this is?

Brush with butter sauce. Brush the phenomenal butter mixture over the tops of the rolls evenly, if there’s any leftover sauce just pour it over the buns.

Bake. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in your preheated oven. Bake for 10 minutes covered then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes uncovered to provide a golden top.

Cut and serve. Cut into individual sliders and serve immediately.

What Is Different About Hawaiian Rolls?

The major difference that separates them from other dinner rolls is a distinct sweetness. The recipe combines milk, sugar, yeast, flour, and sometimes pineapple juice to add that delightful sweetness to the roll, and reflects the strong Portuguese influences in Hawaiian cuisine. Check out my recipe here, if you’d like to make your own.

How Do You Keep Sliders From Getting Soggy?

Baking the sliders as we do in this recipe, is what keeps them from getting soggy. By baking them or toasting them, they will hold up longer and take a longer time before getting soggy.

What Do You Eat Sliders With?

Ham and cheese sliders can be paired with so many sides. Try the following:

  • Classic Potato Salad
  • Broccoli Salad
  • Caesar Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • Grill fruit like pineapple, or fresh cut up veggies and dip work well too.

Expert Tips

  1. If you don’t like ham, feel free to change it up with any deli meat you like, such as turkey or chicken.
  2. Any type of ham will work, such as honey ham, smoked ham or even leftover ham.
  3. Make these sandwiches ahead of time and store them in the fridge covered with foil. When ready to bake, simply follow the instructions on how to bake them.
  4. Try different cheeses such as provolone or white cheddar.

Leftovers

Store cooled leftovers by wrapping in plastic wrap and placing in an airtight container, or freezer bag. They can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Freezer

Wrap individually in plastic wrap; place in freezer-weight resealable plastic bag. Keep sandwiches in the freezer for up to 3 months. Place sandwiches in the fridge the night before to thaw and they are great for lunch. If you want them warm, pop them in the microwave for about 30 seconds or in the oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes or until heated through.

I tasted the butter mixture before I brushed it on the sliders and thought “oh no! This is too tart”. But it wasn’t! It was perfect! I’ll absolutely make these again. I even used half the cheese and thought it was still great! Thanks!
