My Ham And Cheese Sliders

I made these Ham and Cheese Sliders again the other day for lunch, fully expecting leftovers. There were no leftovers. Soft Hawaiian rolls, melty Swiss, delicous ham, and that buttery topping somehow convinced everyone this was the best lunch decision we’ve made all week.

With Super Bowl weekend coming up, these are exactly the kind of thing I want on the table. They are easy to make, easy to serve, and they disappear fast without anyone asking what else is coming. Honestly, if something works this well for lunch, it more than earns its spot on a game day spread.

Why You’ll Love These Ham and Cheese Sliders

  • They’re easy to put together and even easier to eat, which is really the whole point.
  • The combination of soft rolls, hamg, cheese, and that buttery topping just works, every single time.
  • You can prep them ahead and bake when you’re ready, which is ideal for game day or feeding a hungry group.
  • They’re just as good for a casual lunch as they are on a party spread, which makes them surprisingly useful.
  • People don’t politely take one and move on. They hover, go back for seconds, and ask if there are more, so make double!
ingredients you'll need to make ham and cheese sliders.

Key Ingredients & Tips

  • Hawaiian rolls: I stick with Hawaiian sweet rolls because they stay soft inside and soak up that buttery topping without falling apart. Brioche works too, but anything crusty is going to fight you.
  • Ham: Thin sliced deli ham is easy and works great here, but this is also a solid way to use up leftover ham. I like folding the slices instead of laying them flat so you get a little texture in every bite.
  • Swiss cheese: Swiss melts well and balances the sweetness of the rolls, which is why this is the only cheese I ever use for these sliders. If you swap cheeses, just make sure it’s something that melts cleanly.
  • Butter topping: This is not the place to hold back. I pour every last bit over the rolls so it seeps into the sides and does its thing in the oven.
  • Cover, then uncover: Baking the sliders covered first lets the cheese melt without overbrowning the tops. Uncovering at the end is how you get that golden finish.

How To Make Ham And Cheese Sliders

Prep your oven and make the butter topping

process shots showing how to make ham and cheese sliders.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish so nothing sticks later.

In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, poppy seeds, dried chives, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Set it aside. This is what makes the sliders worth making.

Assemble the sliders

process shots showing how to make ham and cheese sliders.

Keep the rolls together and slice them in half horizontally as one unit. Place the bottom half in the prepared baking dish. Layer half the ham evenly over the rolls, add all the cheese, then finish with the remaining ham. Place the top half of the rolls back on.

Add the topping

Brush the butter mixture generously over the tops of the rolls. If some runs down the sides, that’s a good thing.

Bake

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 10 minutes so the cheese melts through. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes, until the tops are golden and the sliders are hot and melty.

Slice and serve

Let the sliders rest for about 5 minutes, then cut into individual portions and serve while hot.

What to Serve with Ham & Cheese Sliders

These sliders are perfect on their own, but if you’re making them for a party, pair them with:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes. Assemble the sliders and keep them covered in the fridge for a few hours. Wait to add the butter topping until just before baking so the rolls don’t get soggy.

What’s the best way to reheat leftovers?

The oven or air fryer works best. Reheat at 350°F until warmed through and the tops crisp back up. The microwave works, but they won’t be as crispy.

Can I freeze ham and cheese sliders?

You can. Freeze them baked or unbaked, tightly wrapped. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat in the oven until hot.

Can I use a different cheese?

Absolutely. Provolone, mozzarella, or cheddar all work. Just stick with a cheese that melts well.

Do I have to use poppy seeds?

No. They add crunch, but skipping them won’t break the recipe.

Why do I need to bake them covered first?

Covering the sliders lets the cheese melt before the tops brown. Uncovering at the end is how you get golden rolls without burning the butter topping.

  • Do not pull the rolls apart. Using a serrated knife, slice the rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom part in the prepared baking dish, cut side up.

  • Cut into individual sliders and serve.

Equipment

  • 9×13-inch Casserole Dish

Notes

  1. Hawaiian sweet rolls work best here because they stay soft and soak up the butter topping without falling apart.
  2. Thin sliced ham layers more evenly and heats through without drying out.
  3. Swiss cheese melts cleanly and balances the sweetness of the rolls, but other melting cheeses work too.
  4. Bake the sliders covered first so the cheese melts before the tops brown.
  5. Leftovers reheat best in the oven or air fryer to bring back the texture.
